It’s too bad iPhone cannot play the MKV video file format on its own. Bad news for those of us who like watching movies on our phones without streaming service subscription.

I personally download my movies from telegram channels. I cringe 😬 anytime I open a movie to watch and see this(the screenshot below.

But worry no more because I’m coming to show you how you can open any type of video file on your iPhone without any hassle at all. Sometimes it’s “party pooping” to see a screen like this after getting all hyped up and excited that you are finally able to find and download your favorite movie... just to open it and be greeted by a screen like this.

How to play an MKV file on your iPhone

The MKV video file format is a “heavy” video file type. It is heavy in such a way that it contains many files stored in one file.
An MKV file can contain, besides the videotape itself;

• Subtitles from multiple languages (where you can choose from after opening/ playing the video file)
• Different audio files of different languages (where you can select the language you want the video to play in when you play the video)

All stored on a single video file.
Mind you, these files are complete files on their own. In an instance of an MP4 video type, in some cases, you would have to download these files separately and import them into your video to access them but MKV comes in the full package.

To open an MKV video file

Step one [1]

Open the App Store and search for VLC media player and download.

Make sure it finishes downloading

Step two [2]

Locate the video file you want to play.
I want to play the first one “Blood and Water 2020”

Tap on it to open

Tap on the share button at bottom left corner of the screen

Select VLC from the list of applications

Voilà [Vwa-Lah]!

With the above simple steps you can play an MKV video file on your iPhone which is originally not supported on iPhone.
With VLC, you can play any type of the video format.
