Fiber Optic Cable and Fiber Splice Process.

I am here with a subject that has a very important place in our lives. Why is it so important? Because the place of communication in our developing world is very big. Communication is done in many ways. But fast and accurate communication is the most preferred.

As technology develops, the speed of communication increases. The internet was first carried to our homes with copper ethernet cables. This process would take place with electrical pulses passing through copper cables. As technology developed over time, fiber optic cables emerged. These developments increased the speed of communication.

Let's get to know fiber optic cables more closely.

In the image below, you can see the internal structure of the fiber optic cable. There are many different sheaths and a core inside. The part called the core consists of a glass raw material called silisyum dioxide. The glass here is a hair-thick thin glass. Its purpose is to transmit information with light pulses. That is, light passes through it.

Fiber optic cable has many advantages.

• It can be used in places where there is electrical interference. It is not affected by parasites.
• Data transfer rate is faster.
• It is high in terms of high bandwidth and amount of information to be transmitted.
• It is cheaper than copper cable.
• It has a longer life than copper cables.

We can count many features similar to these. But there are also disadvantages.

• Although the outer cover is thick, the inner glass part is thin. There is a risk of breakage.
• The transmission line must be short.
• It cannot work as mobile. It is used on the ground.

There are also some disadvantages like these. But we can say that it is much better and faster than copper cable.

Fiber Splicing

Copper cables are made in an easy way to attach to each other. However, there are sensitive devices that we need to use in fiber optic cables. I will briefly explain how fiber splicing is made and what stages it goes through.

2.jpg

As I mentioned above, light passes through these cables. The light must go from the beginning to the end of the line without being broken. If there is a break in the cable, it should be added.

It is the light source you see on the left in the photo. A red light comes out. It is attached to the fiber cable. It is checked whether the incoming light goes to the end of the line. If the light is on somewhere on the cable, a disconnection is detected there. It shines light on the outside of the cable.

The broken cable is cut by the pickpocket. The broken part of the cable is discarded. The ends of the cable are opened, but it is necessary to be sensitive here. Because there is a very small inside of the cable. There is glass. The outer sheath threads are cut.

The cable becomes ready for welding. This device is a must have for welding. If not, you cannot weld. These devices are high precision arc fusion device.

When the ends of the cables are ready, we make the necessary adjustments in our device. We fix the first wire on the right side and the other wire on the left side. Care should be taken at this stage and should be treated sensitively. In addition, dust should not go into the machine.

After the cables are placed, the cover of the machine is closed. When the machine is started, 2 cables automatically come together and weld with an eye-catching light. The weld must be exactly end-to-end. Otherwise, the transmitted light cannot travel inside and data cannot be transmitted.

Operations are very sensitive because data transfer in glass is not as easy as it seems. The fiber attachment made in the photo above enters this device. This device distributes the Internet to multiple users.

The quality of the attachment and the lossless transmission of the line should be checked. Thanks to this device, we can see the wavelength of the light in the fiber optic cable and the transmission-loss value on the line.

As an electronics and communications engineer, that's all I'm going to tell you. I hope I could be useful to you. Thanks for visiting my page and reading my post.

Stay Healthy. Goodbye.
