What are storage devices
This are parts of the computer that are designed to hold data or information. They function like reservoirs on the computer and are made to hold information using deferent Technology and different types of mediums
Temporary and permanent storage
Some Storage devices are made to hold information for a short period of time while others are expected to store the data for a very long time.
RAM
A Random Access Memory is an example of a temporary storage device. They are often called volatile memories because they will loose all the information on it once it's out of power.
ROM
Read only memories are the opposite of temporary memories because they can hold information for as long as they are still functioning.
A few of them can change its content like the EEPROMs

Zip Disk
A Zip disk is an example of an old storage device which stores data using magnetism.
Floppy Diskette
Much like a zip disk, a floppy diskette is an old storage device that stores it data using magnetism.
CD ROM
A compact disk Read Only Memory is a storage device that uses light as the medium for storing data. They had a larger capacity compared to the zip and floppy.
DVD ROM
This is a morden storage device using a technology similar to a CD ROM for saving it's data but has a very large capacity of storage. It can save up to 4Gb of data in form of video, audio, data or pictures
Flash Drives
The flash drive is a type of rewriteable ROM device that can get reprogrammed in to holding new data. It comes in sizes ranging from 128Mb to 1Tb and above. They are the most used storage devices around this days.
SD Card
This are storage devices that are often used on phone or camera. They are small and flat.
Hard Disk
A hard disk is an important storage device on the computer where almost everything is stored. It is sometimes called a fixdisk.
Bluray Disc
This are storage devices like the CD ROM and DVD ROM but capable of holding even larger amount of data at a time.
Buffers and cache
This are memory locations that hold information before, during or after processing.
Uses
- They are used to store date or information.
- They are used to transfer information.
- They hold data during processing.
- They are used as backup devices
