Hi friends, it is my pleasure to bring to us a continuation of my previous post on pigeons. Today's post would specifically talk about diseases, symptoms, prevention and cure in pigeons.

INTRODUCTION

Pigeons are lovely creatures and pets to keep at home, hence the need to take the best care of them as possible. For decades now, they have been ongoing research work in the development of medicine, vaccine and supliments all geared in the total wellbeing of the pigeon pet. And this has since being yielding result in the cure , prevention and Supplemental needs of our pets.

However, there's no guarantee in the total prevention of disease outbreaks since this may occur due to the method of housing in use, infected feeds given to birds or the introduction of infected birds into a new colony. But there are counter measures to apply, to ameliorate or limit damage effects envisaged.

COMMON DISEASES IN PIGEONS

COCCIDIOSIS

This is a parasitic disease which causes fatalities in pigeons. This disease is seen to directly impact,affect and attack the digestive systems of the Pigeon, which causes Los of appetite (eat less). And in some case if they eat, due to the impact of this parasite on the digestive system, there's difficulty to digest the feed well, meaning they take up less resources and minerals.

MAIN CAUSES/PREVENTION OF COCCIDIOSIS
Causes:
The major cause of this parasitic disease is food poisoning. Infection of this nature is easily spread by ingestion of infected feces and tissues.

Prevention:
Pet owners should endeavour to serve fresh and healthy feed to their pets. Immediate quarantining of every pigeon with cocciodosis should be done until it is treated and certified free.

Symptoms:
One of the main and major symptom of coccidiosis is diarrhea. This may be fatal in severe cases.

Main Cure:
With the use of Cocci-Tricho-mix, coccidiosis could be tackled head-on if case has not deteriorated. Cocci-Trichoix is a water soluble powder that treats several diseases. This treatment has been seen to handle other known diseases in birds. It is sometimes referred as multipurpose drugs.

TRICHOMONIASIS

Just like coccidiosis, it is also a parasitic disease in Pigeons. Trichomoniasis is also called canker which is caused by the parasite Trichomonis Gallinae. Funnily, this parasite dies as soon as they leave the body of their host.

Scientists think this parasite is an ancient pathogen that infected even dinosaurs long ago.

This parasite is usually found in some specific areas of the pets body namely; the mouth, throat or at the end of the digestive tract.

Causes:
Trichomoniasis always have an easy entry via drinking water. So the main cause of Trichomoniasis is infected drinking water or an infected parent feeding a youngling.

Prevention:
Regular changing of drinking water and serving of fresh water. Also ensuring drinking troughs are properly cleaned. Immediate isolation of infected bird to a regulated nest.

Symptoms:
Loss of appetite (Not eating at all), weight loss, ruffled looks and sometimes sudden death.

Main Cure:
Just like what we have in coccidiosis cure, Cocci-Tricho-mix can be used to treat Trichomoniasis. Though there are other variety of products that tend to handle trichomoniasis disease.

• We have the 10% Tricho Cure+ which happens to be a standard cure for Trichomonisasis.
• Also is the 10% Ronidazole+. Ronidazole has been confirmed to be a more allround cure with supplementary ingredients. In addition to its cure, it also provides the necessary vitamins and minerals to keep the pigeon strong and healthy.

WORMS

Pigeons are commonly affected by worms. Our feathered pets here always feel this worms most times are delicious to them. However, they reverse and start eating them up from the inside. Most commonly seen worms that affect pigeons are tapeworms, roundworms, Hairworms and Gapeworms.

Sometimes we this worm leave their systems naturally without causing any harm, but in the other case they stick to them and cause health challenges to them. Challenges including diarrhea, appetite loss and reduces their immune system, hence exposing and making them more vulnerable to other diseases.

Causes:
This unnecessary disease is caused by what they consume basically from infected food, other pets/animals dropping in same environment and peaking of crawling insects/worms

Symptoms:
Symptoms seen from this infection include Diarrhea, worms in droppings during defecation, weight loss in body size, unhealthy and weak looks.

Main Cure: As simple it may look, the remedy to this is to administer Worm-Tab to your pigeons. The worm-Tab has the capacity of removing the aforementioned worms from the pigeons’ body.

ORNITHOSIS

This is the a very dangerous disease as it has been seen to be Zoonotic. There's an animal to man transmission and severe measures are to be applied as soon as this disease is seen in the territory. Man deaths has been recorded in this regards, hence the need to apply immediate protective measures.

ORNITHOSIS is caused by the parasite called Chlamydia which has not symptoms of its own but rather decreases the immune system for other infectious diseases to attack. But one of the commonly hit areas are respiratory tract, endurance and strength of a pigeon.

Main Causes:
ORNITHOSIS are air borne if urine- or feces particles are aerosolized and breathed in by humans or animals. Spread of diseases can also be enhanced by beak to beak contact. Infected birds must be quarantined immediately to prevent spread and more fatalities.

Symptoms:
Bird is seen to have low appetite, running fever, diarrhea, inflammation and nasal dropping. Also in some cases, weird breathing sounds, shedding and ruffled looks.

Main Cure:

ORNITHOSIS can be cured by the use of Myco-Orni-Mix. It contains a broad spectrum antibiotic, which has a synergistic effect and also additional minerals and vitamins to strengthen the pigeon’s body during application.

MYCOPLASMASIS

This is a bacterial and viral infection which makes it very dangerous to our pets. It is an infection of the brochai which may be seen in different variants.

Causes:
This is no difference that the primary medium of infection is through infected feed, drinking water, feces and equipment

Symptoms:
Symptoms showcasing this disease include, unwillingness to fly or unusual flying patterns, Nasal discharges, decreased performance and throat inflammation.

Main Cure:
MYCOPLASMASIS can easily be handled by the administering Travi-Allicin-Plus. Due to the effect of this decreases in weakening the immune system, hence making the pigeon ismore vulnerable for many additional diseases, Travi-Allicin-plus help also helps in offering protection during treatment and healing stages.
This treatment has be seen to record more success, fortunately there are some other diseases this treaty has bet recommend.

SALMONELLOSIS/PARATYPHUS

Salmonellosis is a bad bacterial Infection just like the ORNITHOSIS. This is because of it fatality and zoonotic tendencies. It is seen to attack digestive tracts, lowers the immune system for further attacks by other diseases. This is disease is seen to be multipurpose... It can affect different parts of the body at the same time.

Causes/Prevention:
This disease is basically caused by infected feed, drinking water and feces. Tackling this feeding and water troughs as well as regular disposing of waste should be effective.

Symptoms:
Birds keep exhibiting unusual flying movements, limping, decreased appetite which causes weight loss and diarrhea.

Main Cure:
Just like for the treatment seen for MYCOPLASMASIS, Travi-Allicin-Plus is a good option for the treatment of salmonellosis. Travi-Allicin-Plus provides this protection against salmonellis, and other diary like mycoplasmasis, colibacillosis and necrotic enteritis.

For most humans, treatment is not necessary. For pigeons, however, a treatment is necessary. It’s also wise to provide them a cure to prevent any spreading.

E-COLI

This is one of the nightmares of Pigeons and unimaginable disease ever seen in Pigeons. E-coli is literally the nightmare of all pigeon fanciers. Especially the youngsters who are vulnerable to E-coli. It is seen to greatly reduce the immune system of Pigeons just in same way AIDS does in humans.

In 1976 the Type I was discovered in young pigeons. Type II was discovered in 1992 in Belgium. According to research, E-coli is increasingly resistant to several antibiotics, making it more difficult to treat.

E-coli is a strong and flexible disease seen over time to evolves and be more resistant to medications. Treatment should be done early enough to avoid influx of other diseases due to low immunity which may cause instant fatality.

Causes: From the aforementioned diseases, most are pointing through one direction, "Infected feed and drinking water". Priority needed to be place on their feeding and drinking troughs. Infection are seen to occurs more faster when the pigeon has a lot of stress. Stress maybe seen from changes made in loft, change of Diet or having many pigeons in smaller lofts.

Symptoms:
Increased rate of ill birds in a place where their are overcrowding with reduced immunity are some of the symptoms .

HEXAMITASIS/SPIRONUCLEUS

This is a parasitic pigeon diseasencommonly seen to be most harmful to young pigeons and often causes fatality.

Causes:
. Infected feed,
. Drinking water and
. FECES

Symptoms:
. Watery (yellow) diarrhea
. Weight loss
. Dry feathers and
. Unwillingness to fly

Main Cure:
Water soluble powder like Cocci-Tricho-mix is mainly used for this diseases. It was designed for coccidiosis and trichomoniasis, but has been seen to be more effective in treating HEXAMITASIS.

Cocci-Tricho-mix is a water soluble powder that treats several diseases. It’s mainly designed to cure cocciodosis and trichomoniasis, but does wonders in battling hexamitiasis also.

NECROTIC ENTERITIS

This is a hard to be prevented disease because it is virtually found everywhere.it is caused by a parasite called Clostridium perfringens. This disease is seen to be more efficient in poultry unlike it's effect in pigeons.

Causes:
This bacteria can be found anywhere in the environment and has since be difficult to prevent infections.
. The Dust
. The Soil
. Their Feed
. Their Water
. Their Feces

Symptoms:
Symptoms put up for this disease include Ruffle looks, Diarrhea, high mortality rate and depression.

Main Cure: Just as seen for other diseases here, Travi-Allicin-Plus is a good option for NECROTIC ENTERITIS.

These are the most commonly seen diseases found in the life cycle of Pigeons and this post is to enlighten us to make haste to know what to administer should in-case we come across any. This post also stated clearly some preventive measures which basically is the issue of hygiene and also making sure all feeds/feeding/water troughs are well managed.
