Introduction
Hello, precious Steemians. To pet lovers out there, my regards to everyone. I will be taking you on a ride that tells a few things about working animals and I will be using a dog as a case study. Have you ever thought of making your pet more useful than been a companion? This is for you.
Working Pet Dog
In the last edition of my article about dog, I narrated the story about how the dog can be used as an errand pet. Apart for being a good companion and errand pet, there are many other benefits of this pet as they can be converted to working pets. In this context, I will highlight many purposes the working dogs can be used for. And some of the factors that qualified them for the working purpose is because they are; courageous, intelligent, good companion, loyal, easily learn new things and many more.
Service working Dogs
Service dogs are specially trained pets used for the purpose of helping a disabled person such that they have been groomed to learn how to behave in public no matter what circumstances they find themselves. As said earlier, they are designated to follow the disabled person to any of the handler destination. Some of the purposes are to help the blind walk, hearing dog for the deaf, mobility assistance and seizure help.
Therapy working Dogs
Unlike the service dog, therapy dogs are used for therapeutical purposes to support a sick or injured person. They are used to give some kind of emotional supports to the sick or injured and often visit hospitals, nursing homes and even schools to spread the news of how important they are to the purpose. Any breed, size, colour can be used for this purpose but required they are even-tempered, sociable and fearless so as to fit in well for the job.
Military working Dogs
These types of dogs are used by the military sector to assist in the process of military operations. These dogs as are used as detectors, trackers, sentries, scouts and for search and rescue purposes. They perform well in this field. The most suitable breeds of dogs for this purpose are; German shepherds, Dutch shepherds and Belgian Malinois.
Police working Dogs
Police dogs are used by police and other law enforcement to be of assistance to their operations. They are referred to as K-9s, and can often be used as a detector dog to sniff substances and also used to chase criminals and track down criminals. K-9s are very loyal to the job they are used for. Some of the breeds widely used are; German Shepherd and Belgian Milanois.
Search and Rescue working Dogs
These are the dogs used for the purpose of search and rescue. Dogs are characterized with a great smelling ability. They have the capacity to smell and with that quality, they are often used as a search and rescue working dog. Breeds used for this purpose are; Beagles, Labrador Retrievers, and Golden Retrievers.
Detection working Dogs
Dogs are often used as a detection working dog by law enforcement agencies to detect either substances or dangerous weapons. This special dog carry out the purpose by smelling the particular substance or object in question.
Herding working Dogs
Herding dogs are used to keep a particular group of animals, example is a dog serving a purpose of shepherd for a herd of sheep. These dogs are well trained to effectively carry out their job just like every other shepherd would do. Breeds often used for this purpose are; King shepherds, border collies, Black Mouth Curs, and Icelandic sheepdogs.
