Sunflower is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, also known as sulfur cosmos and yellow cosmos, native to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America and other parts of North and South America, as well as Europe, Asia, and Australia. This species and its cultivars Popular as an ornamental plant in gardens in winter weather.

Special Features of Cosmos Flower
  • Cosmos seeds spread quickly and can take over the surrounding area in no time.

  • Germination occurs in 7 to 21 days at an optimum temperature of 75 degrees F; Flowering begins 50 to 60 days after germination

  • Cosmos plants do not require very fertile soil. If grown in very fertile soil, they become tall and lanky, and in this case the number of flowers is reduced.

  • As soon as the seed falls on the ground, it begins to grow. Germination takes place between 7 to 10 days in light moisture. However, perennial cosmos grow from rhizomes (a type of specialized root).

  • The flowers are a dye, producing an orange-yellow dye, used to dye wool in pre-Columbian America and later in South Africa. In Thailand, they are eaten in salads or in herbal teas with the effect of inhibiting pancreatic lipase.

  • This species of cosmos is considered a semi-hardy annual, although plants may re-emerge by self-seeding over several years. Its leaves are opposite and finely divided. Plant height varies from 1-7 feet (30-210 cm). The original and its cultivars appear in shades of yellow, orange and red.

  • Flowers do well in sun, although tolerate partial shade

Method of planting

It is propagated by seed and cuttings method. But in most cases propagation is done through seeds.

Care after planting
October to November is the best time to sow the seeds in the field. Generally, plants start flowering about 30 to 35 days after germination. These flowers can be produced directly in the ground and in tubs. Well-drained loamy soil in sunny bright conditions is best for growing this flower, but it also grows well in clayey loam soil.
