Contest Alert:1 picture 1 Story Week #52
Good day, my dear friends. I just came across a contest organized by @suboohi in the Steem For Pakistan Community. Even though I entered at the last minute, I believed I could shared an important traditional moment with my fellow Steemians.
Today, I am sharing an image of milk boiling on a traditional stove. This is a common sight in Sri Lanka on significant occasions such as New Year’s Day, when someone moves into a new home, or when someone offers alms to Kiri Ammavarun. The stove is made up of three stones and uses fire to heat the pot. Place the stove in the middle and start the fire. The fire is set till it boils and overflows from all sides.
The fire used to boil the milk is also very important. It symbolizes warmth and light. It represents the family’s hope for a bright future filled with love and unity. Everyone gathers around the stove and helps with the fire boiling the milk using firewood. When it overflows, everyone cheers and wishes for a better future.
The act of boiling milk has a lot of meaning. People in my nation think that boiling milk on the new year's dawn brings good luck and blessings to the house. Furthermore, they believe that spilled milk is a sign of abundance and prosperity. The overflowing milk means that the home has plenty of food, happiness, and wealth.
This shared photo was taken when my sister's house had a "Kiri Ammawarun's" almsgiving. After presenting alms to Kiri Ammawarun, they asked to boil the milk in the middle of the home, closer to Kiri Ammawarun. Then my sister’s family gathered around the stove and boiled the milk till it overflowed. The tradition was a lovely way to celebrate that important occasion with hope and pleasure for blessing.
