Steemit Engagement Challenge / SEC-S19 / W6 | "How are social medias affecting our society in both good and bad ways? "
Hello,I'm @sumayaorin , from #Bangladesh

But today I am going to try and take the politics out of it and offer a personal view on social media. Mostly, now that I have a four-year-old daughter, it's high time I say what it means to me as a parent.

Let's look at the brighter side first, for with social media, there has been much gain. It has changed the way we communicate, as now people can instantly connect from anywhere in the world. This process has developed a global community that knows no boundaries and enhances cultural interaction and mutual support.
Social media has also significantly democratized information: everyone now is in the know of what is happening where and at what time, mostly bypassing the traditional filters. This gives citizens more power to be informed and active in shaping their lives. Social media has notably given a voice to the voiceless , enabling them to raise concerns and organize protests.
It is a complete game changer for the businesses especially - small and medium sized enterprises. They can reach a vast audience engage in targeted advertising and leverage influencer marketing to build brand loyalty. In today's digital age , having an effective social media presence is almost essential for business success.

On the other hand it also has a dark side that should not be ignored . The spread of misinformation and fake news is probably one of the most troubling. Thousands of such examples in Bangladesh show how quickly false information can burst and lead the masses to panic, become confused, and sometimes even spur violence. This, once again, testifies to the dangerous potential social media can harbor for provoking dangerous narratives.
Another very critical concern is the influence on mental health, particularly in youth. General social media represents a perfect life in comparison to which one feels inadequate and has high levels of anxiety and depression. Cyberbullying has also turned into a critical issue, and, with social media, this abusive behavior gets worse outcomes.
Secondly, social media allows very poor privacy. Most of the time, personal information is shared openly or extracted without the person's consent in such a way that it could potentially endanger the private lives of many other individuals and even cause identity theft. The algorithms underlining these platforms automatically generate echo chambers, through which mainly content that validates existing opinions is served to the users, further polarizing and dividing societies.

But the question is whether social media works better for common people or corporate companies. The answer is both. Although it works like a powerful tool in terms of providing platforms for personal views, maintaining connections with loved ones, and gaining knowledge, all these advantages require certain critical faculties and digital literacy to avoid its pitfalls. Social Media is a boon for the corporations. The platform is unparalleled to do marketing, customer engagement, and brand building. An organization can target the global market with a meager expense, and so this is a tool they cannot afford to miss in modern times. But, it has also initiated the debate over the commercialization of the social space and exploitation of user data to earn money.

Social media is more or less double-edged to me as a mother and concerned citizen. It opens numerous unprecedented opportunities for man to build connections, learn from, and foster economic growth. Meanwhile, it imposes colossal risks on privacy, mental health, and social harmony. However, if people are careful with the level of their consumption and apply some form of critical thought, issues caused by the media can be largely reduced and positive attributes maximized.
Social media today has been one strong force which may either uplift or take society down. The choice is ours, and one should navigate such a landscape judiciously to glean the benefits at the same time being very cautious of the pitfalls associated with it. So let's try and make something positive out of social media by using it for our benefit—for connecting, informing, and empowering—while keeping safe our well-being and privacy. Before ending I would like to invite my steemian friends @waterjoe @eliany @paholags @ridwant to share their valuable thoughts on this context.

Social media is a two edged sword with both positive and negatives effects just like you have mentioned, social media has help build friendships of all tribes and increase awareness about what is going on and if need for change allow people to share their opinions about the situation. Social media has cause a lot of problems but those problems are caused by us humans by the way we use it.
Saludos amiga.
