CREATIVE WRITING: It Pays to be Kind

You might be wondering what kindness refers to. According the the English dictionary, kindness refers to the state of being kind. It is also referred to as an instance of kind or charitable behaviour.

There are so many things that do happen in the most unexpected way and Kindness it one of them. It has a way of returning in an unexpected way to the one who offered the kindness. Today, I experienced firsthand an unexpected harvest of kindness not just ones but twice.

Earlier today, a parent to one of my students came to my table, seeking advice on behalf of the son. As busy as I was, I was able to give her audience. She needed to approach higher authority but was first directed to my table by her sons colleague. We discussed and I took ample time to offer my opinion and advice with the hope that it will help ease her worry.

I was surprised to see her again at my tabke later in the day because I had forgotten all about the discussion we had earlier. To my surprise, she came thanking me with a monetary package. It happened to be that on her meeting the the higher authority everything turned out well as she had applied everything we discussed. Her gesture towards me was so touching and it reminded kind words and empathy can make much impact.

Also later in the day, a colleague whom I had assisted some time back came in. Personally, I had totally forgotten about what transpired between us way back. When it comes to being kind and showing empathy, I do it as if I'm doing it to myself without expecting anything in return. I really wasn't expecting any favours from him. He came expressing sincere gratitude for the assistance I had offered him. He said he never forgets acts of kindness and was waiting for the perfect time to repay. He came bearing a monetary package.

While there is joy in receiving monetary gift, true reward of kindness is far far beyond material gains. The joy of seeing one's burden lifeted is priceless and knowing you're at the centre of it can be so therapeutic. Kindness enriches our lives, bringing about positive a relationship and a more compassionate world.

It indeed pays to be kind. Make it a lifestyle and together we make the world a better place.
