People would often say that you need to be employed to survive in Nigeria, but are these jobs available? In the past, going to school and graduating from the University guarantees a well paid and comfortable job but these days, the competition is higher, the jobs are less available and when you do find a good one, you have to go the extra mile to portray a more attractive portfolio. Imagine just graduating from the University and all the jobs you find require at least 5-years job experience. It can be disheartening but it is what it is. As such, people delve into other businesses and self employment is the reign of the day. I could go on and on about this topic of employment but it wouldn't make a dent on the reality of things in my country. So, I'll focus my discussions around the three (3) major discussions for this article.

Teaching as the most popular job in Nigeria.

Every year, a lot of tertiary institutions take in students into the faculty of Education. This faculty usually has the most amount of students in a school session and this could be as a result of many reasons. The first one being that the government is trying to invest more in the education of the youth, and the second being that it is the most available job in the country.

New schools are built everyday, from Nursery, Primary and Secondary Institutions which would offer a young graduate an opportunity to start from somewhere. It is also possible for graduate from other faculties to venture into teaching as a result of low job opportunities. I seem recall my secondary school physics teacher telling us that he had a B.Sc in Electrical Engineering.

I truly believe Teaching is a noble profession, my parents are teachers and I also enjoy teaching new upstarts in the field of Quantity Surveying. While teaching can take various forms, formal or informal, it does support my argument that is it in fact the most popular job in my country.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Job Market

At the first sign of AI trying to take over some of the jobs of the professionals in the construction industry, a lot of workshops were held of which I attended two. The focus was directed on how we can adopt these technologies and make use of it to develop better services rather than panic about losing jobs. Artificial intelligence runs on the data that is supplied to them, which means that human intervention is still required to deliver better services. Yes, they are here to stay, not to take our jobs but to make it better.

Reducing Unemployment

To reduce the rising unemployment rate, the common response would be to create more jobs. While this might seem like the only solution to many, up-skilling is another. Jobs, like every other thing on earth is subject to change overtime, and as such, developing new skills can help to keep up with this new trends which doesn't only develops your relevance in the field but also creates new jobs for you.

For instance, in the construction field, about 2 dozen years ago, no one knew about "Project Management", but as the complexity of building construction developed, there was a need to expand into this region and for professionals to be relevant in this field, they had to further develop themselves.
Similarly, with the new introduction of BIM tools (Building Information Modelling), a lot of professionals like the Architects, Quantity Surveyors and others are begining to explore this new area brought about my technological advancement in construction.

Self employment is also an option. Although this sometimes huge requires capital to start, it starts with having good ideas that are worth investing in. If you need a job and there aren't my available to you, simply create one for yourself by first trying to discover a problem around you and then offer a solution at a reasonable price.

On this note, I will conclude this write up by stating that regardless of the issue of unemployment inmost parts of the country, there is indeed hope for the future as innovations continue to take place, we only have to adapt to these changes and develop new ideas.

Few years ago, when one just graduates from the University, there is a belief that job is waiting for the person which somehow was true. But today the case is the rising unemployment in the country. Jobs can't be seen and even if you see anyone you need to have a criteria (like you mentioned 5-year experience) and sometimes you will have to buy the job. Disheartening !!.

A skill is one thing that Matters to the survival of a person(average citizen) in Nigeria.

Teaching is a good job. One problem with the teaching job in Nigeria is the salary. TEACHERS REWARDS ARE IN HEAVEN , but they have to rewarded here first before been rewarded by God in heaven.

AI are innovation in the technological realm Which came from logical thinking by man. They Have a programmed system that allows them to perform activities. It is true that they wont take the job of humans but i think they have Disadvantages also...

Thanks for sharing and good luck with the challenge...
Ps-Thanks for the invite

Most teachers are still owed salaries. I really hope the nation gets better. Thanks for the support.

Greetings friend, I hope your participation goes well.

I am happy to know that the government promotes education with the development of institutions trained for the professional development of students.

Something you say is true, AI still depends on the information and algorithms inserted and the Data, so they still require supervision.

In my country, self-employment is also an option for many people, but the ideal is that each person has the opportunity to have a professional job through studies.

Happy day mate joshwolfman.

Yes, that's the ideal thing, but it doesn't always work that way, at least not anymore. Thank you for the addition.

You're welcome mate joshwolfman, good luck with your post.

The rate of unemployment in our country Nigeria 🇳🇬 is indeed alarming and the government are not helping matters see how graduate are working round the street without job and it is very bad.

Teaching is indeed a good profession in Nigeria 🇳🇬 and they are well paid byvthe Government, whivh tgeybuse in taking care of their family.

Learning a skill through handwork will be a good way to reduce the rate of unemployment in the country because you can employ yourself without waiting for the government and you can use the money you earn from it to take care of your personal needs.

Creating job opportunities and also promoting trading and skilk aquisition will be a good way in reducing unemployment in Nigeria 🇳🇬.

I really enjoyed reading your entry as I learned a lot from it, keep it up my friend 💪.

Sending you good wishes brother 🤝 have a nice day 🤗

I honestly appreciate your insights my brother, thanks for the contribution.

You are welcome 🤝 brother 😍 steem on

You forgot to mention hotel work.. that one is another easy and popular job vacancies, you see people jump into for the main time till they get a better job!

Yes, you're right, that's another area most people would apply for because of the low level of qualifications required.
