SEC-S16/W2 - "Childhood trauma and incidents: how do they affect our children's life? "

Children are not exempted from problems...
They encountered lots of childhood traumas.

•Child Neglect: There are some children who do not know their biological parents, they were raised and brought up in orphanage homes. This could affect the mental well-being of the child making them become aggressive toward people. Some who aren't so lucky to get into good hands become nuisance to the community.

•Bulling in School: I made up my mind never to send any of my children to a boarding school because of what I experienced there. I'm not saying this to discourage parents from sending their wards to good boarding schools. I discovered that there were some bullies who go out to junior students hostel with empty bowels and return with lots of items like fish, milk, garri, sugar and so on.

•Child Labour: I was taught in school that every family members have specific roles but the roles of the parents have somehow been shifted to the children in some families because of the rate of financial insecurity. Many children hawk on streets to supplement some needs in the family. All this fo a long way in affecting the education of the child especially for those that do this during school hours. This doesn't mean children mustn't assist their parents in whatever business they are into but there must be check and balances.

•Gender Discrimination: Traditions and customs has eaten deep into the minds of many individuals. There are some places were the female gender are restricted from participating in some social responsibilities for reasons best known to them. This persist even in some religions settings. I witnessed a scene were a male and female who were out for evangelism. When they were done, the male instructed the female to take the closing prayer but the fellow they were preaching to objected to it. Is this not gender discrimination?

Children should be protected not just by their parents and loved ones but by every concerned individual. It should be a collective effort.
Parents should encourage their wards to always be open to them regarding any issues bothering them.

Guardians should not treat children under their care as slaves but as fellow humans.
Severe punishment should be given out to those who violate the child's rights law.
Children should be made to understand their human rights, respect individuals in the community but never get intiminated by them or to remain silent when bullied but to report to the appropriate authorities.

All hands must be on deck with regards educating a child about good and bad touches which could generate into severe child abuse.

Let the children know that the are some parts of their body that shouldn't be exposed to a second eye. They shouldn't tolerate anyone who takes delight in touching any sensitive part of their body.
It should be discussed as a lesson in school in any related subject and during assemblies.

Raising a good child is the desire of parents but since wishes are not horses, beggars won't ride on it. In this light, lot of things will have to be put in place for this to be actualize.

Parents will have to sacrifice some quality time with their children helping them out with issues bothering them. Resources must as well be sacrificed in taking care of the child needs for them not to indulge in practices that will bring shame to the family and community.
Interceding for the child to be of good behaviour is another important sacrifice parents would have to engage in.
