An Unforgettable Final Day in Kerala: Houseboats, Thrills, and Memories

Hello friends, once again, I welcome you all to my blog. I hope all of you are writing your own blogs as well. So, let me also share the journey of my last day in Kerala with all of you. I’ll try to make sure you find something in my diary that brings you joy as you read it.

So, let’s begin today’s post.

All of us friends had already boarded the train from Trivandrum and reached Alleppey around 9 AM. Once we arrived, we booked a cab and headed towards the houseboat location. However, on the way, I asked the cab driver to stop at a restaurant for a while so we could have breakfast, as we weren’t sure when we would get to the houseboat and have the chance to eat. Also, it was breakfast time by then.

In the morning, all of us ordered dosa for breakfast, and after finishing it, I made the payment. At the counter, I noticed that the owner had displayed all old Indian currency notes, which looked really nice. I took a picture of it.

Then we left the place, but before that, I bought some bananas from a nearby shop at the rate of 70 rupees per kg. After getting the bananas, I sat back in the cab and told the cab driver that I wanted to buy banana chips for my office friends. He took me to a famous shop. I asked for the price there, but I didn’t find much of a difference, so I came back, and we headed straight to the boathouse.

After paying the cab drivers, we met a boat owner and booked a personal houseboat for 13,000 Indian rupees, which included lunch for the day, dinner, and breakfast the next morning.

We boarded the boat and placed all our belongings in our rooms. Before finalizing this boat, we had checked the prices of 2-3 other boats, but they were too expensive and not as good, so we decided to go with the first boat.

The boys went to their room, and the girls to theirs, and we quickly freshened up. After that, everyone took pictures on the boat and started enjoying the views of the backwater lake.

Since I was feeling very tired, I went to take a short nap in my room. What happened was that we hadn’t booked our train reservations because it was showing as waitlisted, and the train from Trivandrum was at 5 AM. However, in Indian Railways, the current ticket window opens before the train starts at the source station, so I stayed awake until 3 AM. As soon as the window opened, I booked the train ticket. All of us slept on the train, but of course, I still hadn’t gotten enough sleep. So I slept for a while on the houseboat, while all my roommates had already showered and gotten ready.

After I woke up and showered, I heard from outside that we had booked a speedboat ride and was asked if I would like to join. I quickly came outside, put my phone in my pocket, and got on the speedboat, putting on a life jacket and sitting in the back.

The boat operator gave us a thrilling ride, and it was an unforgettable experience for me. For those 20 minutes, he performed drifts that were absolutely thrilling for all of us.

After that, we returned to our houseboat and paid the speedboat operator ₹1800, which is equivalent to 110 steam.

Then we took some great photos on the houseboat, and by then, our lunch was ready. All of us sat together and started our meal, which included fish, dal fry, vegetables, rice, and chapati, along with cold drinks.

After lunch, we enjoyed ourselves while the boat continued moving. As evening approached, our boat stopped at a place where we saw beautiful paddy fields. The sunset view over the backwater lake was stunning, and we took some photos after getting off the boat.

Since we wanted to buy banana chips, we asked the boat operator how far the market was. He said it was far, but he offered to go and get them for us, though he mentioned it would cost extra. My friends and I said we wouldn’t pay too much, so we asked some locals for directions. Vinod and I took the government ferry to the market, noting down all the details of which boat to take and where to return to where our boat was anchored.

When we reached the market, we did some shopping and returned within 1.5 hours by ferry. The funny part is that while Vinod and I were seated, the houseboat operator sat nearby, looking surprised and wondering how we managed to come back without paying the extra fare he had quoted. We looked at each other and smiled. After about 20 minutes, we reached our boat, where everyone was waiting for us. We arrived and then had a party. After dinner, we all sat outside for a while and then went to our rooms to sleep.

The next morning, our boat left at 6 AM. After freshening up, we packed our bags, had morning tea and snacks, and enjoyed the last moments of the Kerala backwaters from the common area.

We checked out of the houseboat at 8 AM and caught a train to Kochi. We had general tickets because the journey from Alappuzha to Kochi was only 1.5 hours. However, we boarded a special train, and the ticket checker informed us we were on the wrong train and would have to pay a fine of ₹600 per head, or we could get off at the next station and take another train. This put us in a tricky situation, as missing the train would make us late for the airport, and we were low on cash. So, we got off at the next station, waited for the next train, and finally reached Kochi.

From there, we booked a cab and headed to the airport. After checking in, we went to the lounge for a quick 15-minute lunch since we didn’t have much time. After finishing lunch, we boarded our flight to Ahmedabad.

In just 2 hours, we landed at Ahmedabad airport, where we took one last group photo before everyone headed to their respective homes.

These were the final moments of my Kerala trip, which will always remain in my heart. The memories of this trip will stay with me forever.

I don’t know when I’ll have the chance to go on such a trip again, but all my friends and I made the most of the present moment, capturing it in photos and cherishing it with beautiful memories.
