Education

Saudi Arabia's education system has undergone a remarkable development. When the Kingdom was founded in 1932, education was only available to a small number of people, mostly the children of rich families residing in large cities.
Saudi Arabia's education system now comprises over fifty public and private universities, with more on the way; around 30,000 schools; and a considerable number of colleges and other institutions. The system is available to all people and provides free education, literature, and health care to pupils.

While Islamic studies remain at its center, the current Saudi educational system also provides comprehensive training in a wide range of arts and sciences. This diversity aids the Kingdom's residents in preparing for life and work in a global economy.

Every Muslim, whether male and female, must have an education. The Holy Qur'an and Hadith [the Prophet Muhammad's teachings and practices] underscore the value of education on several occasions.
Muslim governments developed schools, universities, and libraries that were unique in the world in the years after the establishment of Islam (632 AD).

During the Dark Ages in Europe, the Islamic world became a center of learning, making significant contributions to astronomy, science, art, philosophy, and medicine - a period known as the "Golden Age."

Muslim academics and scientists pioneered methods that were the foundation of modern sciences and were taught in European colleges until the 18th century.

In Saudi Arabia, formal elementary education began in the 1930s.
By 1945, the country's founder, King Abdulaziz bin Abdelrahman Al-Saud, had undertaken an intensive initiative to create schools in the Kingdom. Six years later, in 1951, the country had 226 schools with a total enrollment of 29,887 students. In 1957, the first university, today known as King Saud University, was established in Riyadh.
The first government school for girls was created in 1964, and by the end of the 1990s, there were girls' schools in every region of the Kingdom.

Female students now account for more than half of the more than 6 million students enrolled in Saudi institutions and colleges.

Education in General

The Saudi educational system attempts to prepare students for life and work in the modern world while also addressing the religious, social, and economic demands of the kingdom.

Another significant objective is to eliminate adult illiteracy.

In the Kingdom, general education comprises of kindergarten, six years of primary school, and three years of intermediate and high school.

After finishing primary and intermediate school, pupils can choose between attending a high school with commerce, arts, and sciences programs, or a vocational school.

Students in high school take comprehensive tests twice a year, which are overseen by the Ministry.
Saudi schools provide a wide range of educational programs. They cover a wide range of topics, including arithmetic, physics, literature, history, Arabic, and Islam. The Ministry of Education establishes overarching standards and is in charge of special education for the disabled.

The government continues to raise educational standards by providing high-quality teacher training programs, raising requirements for student evaluation, and expanding the use of instructional technology.

For example, computer science was introduced at the secondary level in 2000. The management of the educational system has also been enhanced by delegating more decision-making responsibility to provincial school boards.
These efforts are bearing fruit. The number of Saudi schools has grown considerably, but so has the quality of instruction. The student-to-teacher ratio in the Kingdom is one of the lowest in the world, at 12.5 to 1.
