Carbon Offsets are crucial to reach Carbon neutrality
- Most attention in the carbon space has been given to carbon permits rather than carbon offsets, which reflects the very different sizes of the markets ($0.6bn vs $44bn). But, it seems this is going to change.
- There has lately been a steady stream of corporate “net zero” targets announced, with Total being the most recent only last week.
- Carbon performance of European integrated O&G companies (Transition Pathway). All of these targets talk about the use of carbon offsets & carbon capture.

Analysis and Comments
It clearly seems that without a meaningful carbon offset market, many of these targets are unachievable. As a result we should expect the carbon offset market to continue to grow rapidly (its tripled in the last three years).
Also, the quality of the offsets should improve, as large, well regulated, listed companies invest heavily in the market. This is good news for the sector, which to be honest has faced some issues around credibility in the past.
