Quantum internet still lies in the future but is expected to shift the way people transfer data through modern technologies, making it safer and faster. This means that quantum internet is very different from the classical internet, which is based on definite bits that can only exist in two states; they are equal and opposite to each other.

Another potential of quantum internet is capability for almost inexhaustible security that, as it was mentioned before, cannot be breached or hacked. In this process, called quantum key distribution (QKD), lock exchanges are made using quantum states. The kind of interception that is likely to take place in the transmission of quantum states of information alters the states as well and this in turn warns the sender or the receiver.

With quantum internet, it is also expected that future breakthroughs in the computational capabilities of a number of applications will also be achieved. If quantum computers can be connected and perform operations jointly to solve problems that classical computers can currently do, a solution to these problems becomes more achievable. This does have practical use in several different areas, including cryptography, drug development, and in modifying financial models.

There has been a progression of impressive work in establishing quantum networks by researchers. Controlling and measuring entangled qubits have been achieved recently over long distances, which is a key development towards having an eventual operating quantum internet. However, stepping ahead is not an easy task as they are facing issues like stability of qubit and development of quantum network with scalability and based on these challenges, there are opportunities that can lead to a transformational technology.

Quantum internet is a novel idea that has the potential of reinventing communication and computation in further development stages and having a number of impacts on different fields of science, technology, and people’s life.
