Opioids are essential medications used to relieve severe pain, especially in patients with chronic or terminal illnesses, without which many patients would suffer greatly. Unfortunately, opioids also have significant side effects, such as respiratory depression, constipation, addiction, etc., which ultimately limit their use.

But now a group of researchers from the University of Geneva have discovered small antibodies capable of slowing the serious side effects of opioids such as morphine or fentanyl, which they have called "NbE nanoantibodies", which represent an extremely promising avenue of research in the field of pharmacology.

Nanoantibodies are antibody fragments originating from camelids (llamas, alpacas) and sharks that are characterized by their small size and high specificity, allowing them to bind to molecular targets with great precision. In the case of opioids, nanoantibodies could be designed to bind to opioid receptors in the brain, thus modulating their activity and reducing unwanted side effects.

Los nanoanticuerpos son fragmentos de anticuerpos originarios de camélidos (llamas, alpacas) y tiburones que se caracterizan por su pequeño tamaño y alta especificidad, lo que les permite unirse a dianas moleculares con gran precisión. En el caso de los opioides, se podrían diseñar nanoanticuerpos que se unan a los receptores opioides en el cerebro, modulando así su actividad y reduciendo los efectos secundarios no deseados.

Nanoantibodies could specifically block certain subtypes of opioid receptors, thereby reducing effects such as respiratory depression, constipation and sedation, without affecting analgesia. In addition, by binding to opioids, nanoantibodies could prolong their half-life in the body, allowing for the administration of less frequent doses.

Los nanoanticuerpos podrían bloquear de manera específica ciertos subtipos de receptores opioides, reduciendo así efectos como la depresión respiratoria, la constipación y la sedación, sin afectar la analgesia, además al unirse a los opioides los nanoanticuerpos podrían prolongar su vida media en el organismo, permitiendo la administración de dosis menos frecuentes.

I am well aware that this is not a solution for all those poor people addicted to this type of substance. The problem with these people does not lie in the drugs but in the way they understand life and only a proper education can mitigate this, but at least they should not have to lose their dignity lying in the streets and dying like dogs.

Soy muy consciente de que esto no es ninguna solución para toda esa pobre gente adicta a este tipo de sustancia, el problema de estas personas no radica en las drogas sino en el modo en que entienden la vida y solo una educación adecuada lo puede mitigar, pero al menos que no tengan que perder su dignidad tirados por las calles y muriendo como perros.
