TEA and University
Source
Today let's talk about that time that perhaps every dad has dreamed of from the moment he knows he will have a child, UNIVERSITY, what career? His grades, how outstanding he can be, the costs of studies, where he will live, I could say a lot of them, but.... My child has ASD, what do I do?
As always, this is a question that haunts us when we have to face challenges on a daily basis or when we start to show what will be a new experience for him.
But we have an advantage, our child has a diagnosis, and a report that can be used and that can make it much easier or more adaptable for him/her, teachers, classmates and us.
There are several items to take into account
Socialization: we take into account how overwhelming this field can be for them, so it is something that we must work on from a young age and we may or may not be able to get them to adapt, but they will be able to know in advance that it is something that will be necessary.
Sensory sensitive, it can be exhausting to have to be alert, socialize and understand what is happening around you in a university, those of us who have gone through it know how intimidating people can be, the voices, the lights, they have a great load of sensory stimulation.
Masks can be overwhelming, and loaded with great wear and tear for him, since he mostly wears them this brings another burden in itself.
Anxiety raises him to almost 100, which can lead to a trigger that triggers a crisis within him at some point.
In universities (not all) there is a lack of understanding of these students with needs that are usually seen and that may be strange for many, and the lack of curricular adaptation may be non-existent, preventing our children from reaching that desired academic potential that we know they can give.
It is important that higher education institutions UNDERSTAND that not all people have the same rhythm of assuming or understanding what they are taught and it is absurd to have to face this type of cases that have been lost of brilliant people due to a bad behavior of a professor, or a lack of ethics when it comes to honoring being the one who teaches or that does not understand that for many people especially ASD, university life can be their foray into the development of their professional life and their independent life.
Socialisation is really key and infact helps you to take some things in shape
Asi es pero para ellos a veces casi imposible lograrla
