I suppose their view is that if the ship is sinking, the ones who are closest to the surface are better off. As a lifeguard, I can say, that under water is the same at one meter as ten.
Really interesting, you work as a lifeguard? I always see that job as a risky one, much respect for you.
Once you feel confident swimming, not a big deal. Now I did not work at a beach, but have learned to surf and known locals to head toward the hurricane surf while the beaches were closed (ok so I did it once or twice, but did not go out into the water- still very much a city-slicker..). What was surprising is how the party scene gravitates to the job.
