Tech Bros Lose Jobs and Get More Hate For Being In the Tech World

in Project HOPE2 months ago

Before the 2000s, becoming successful in any career required a good looking big suit and a fancy looking business card. The career of choice then was Law, Medicine, Company management, or finance. In fact, my dad wanted me to become a medical doctor and it was as like if I didn't become that, I had no future in the world.

Few years later, not even too long came new millionaires who would wear Flip-flop and Vim instead of the suits and shoes that the people before the 2000s didn't. They were known as Tech Bros. These set of people didn't have to work based on 9 to 5, they didn't need to be confounded to a space and to put icing to the cake, they had juicy perks, made more money, and work fewer hours.

Actually, everyone loved tech bros because who wouldn't love someone who is making life easier as they give you easy access to reach one's family and friends through one tap on a phone and the same tech bros made phones more slick and fancy while improving the functionality, so who would be against them making money moreover, it looked like millionaires in the traditional system prior to the emergence of tech bros made their money through the broken system but tech bros weren't doing so but just about 20 years now, it looks like they are worse than the traditional career millionaires and billionaires.

I went through a tech recruiting company which is actually the tech company itself Crossover, and I realize that tech bros are being laid off because there are a lot of options. The promise in the past was to be able to code and be guaranteed a good job but this isn't the case again. Tech bros are being forced to grind and in fact CEOs of major companies are now saying that the future of their company would not need entry level tech bros because AI would be replacing them.

Between the dark Age of when tech bros became a thing and now the golden age, a lot of things have changed. There was the Dot com Bubble and this was the dark age of the tech bro era were just adding dot com to the name of the company was enough to send the company to the moon but this ended when the bubble busted and only a few companies survived it till date and they have turned out to become one of the most valuable companies in history.

People really wanted the tech that these companies were willing to give because they were really solving people's need. The iPhone was launched in 2007 and even at the height of corporate bankruptcy, people were still lining up for the 3G iPhone. These companies began to make money as people wanted them and investors were willing to invest tons of money. The companies moved from giving value to extracting value since they were monopolies.

In the early and mid 2000s, being a developer was a ticket to work in companies like Apple, Google, Netflix, Facebook and Amazon, and these companies were continuously recruiting because they didn't want other competitors to have access to these tech bros in a technique they used called blitzscaling, although they needed a lot of devs to add value to their platforms and ecosystem.

What these companies do is that they needed the staff to do all the jobs they had to do after which they start to think of what to do with them. Although, some of them would hoard developers from the market as most of them would do nothing but this has changed following increased interest rate, inflation, and investors not willing to invest in these companies again like in the past leading to high layoffs.

Now, a lot of tech bros will be losing their jobs to AI as most companies are willing to adopt the technology for ground/entry level tech jobs thereby supporting automation. Also, just as the hate for tech company increases so does the hate for tech bros increase simultaneously because they are seen as the tools used to farm their data, sell their data, and so on.

Sort:

I once read about an AI that was programmed to code other AI's. Imagine if this kind of tech goes mainstream, a lot of human devs would have to compete with AI for jobs. Tech field is becoming more competitive.
Nice piece buddy.

I think we should now be aware that we are in the artificial intelligence age and so we must actually revolve before it is too late because there are things we will be losing out in years to come
