Actually, different people have different norms. Like in the middle east, it is a normal thing to negotiate while in the united state, not everyone negotiates.
The truth about negotiation is that you are putting a price on the hour you put in getting the money you are about to spend. Working for 12 hours to get $100 and then spend it all on a sweatshirt shows that you have placed a value on the 12 hour work which is a sweatshirt.
