Symptoms of Depression: "Cognitive Triad" - Part 2 (2/2)

in Project HOPE2 years ago

Hello, greetings my friends, this is the continuation of previous post.

Who was Aaron Beck and what was his contribution to psychology and psychiatry?

To give us some context, let's briefly meet Aaron Beck. He was an American psychiatrist and professor, who during his lifetime conducted important research on depression and developed a highly effective and positive therapy, which has allowed many patients in the world to overcome this disease. It is called CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which allows treating psychological disorders and is based on cognitive restructuring, a process that invites the person with depression to modify what he thinks and interprets of the events that happen to him, as well as the situations he is going through so that the patient can realize and understand that not everything that happens to him is as he interprets it and can then come up with more realistic ideas that allow him to adapt to the things that happen. In simple words, not to exaggerate or "dramatize" unnecessarily what happens to us.

I quote verbatim these paragraphs from the page Life Phrases: The American Psychological Association (APA) recognizes Aaron Beck as one of the five most influential therapists of all time. Among his contributions to the field are his questionnaire for assessing the severity of a person's depression and other major contributions to cognitive psychology... The therapeutic models developed by Beck with the goal of curing depression would later be extended to other pathologies, which are very common nowadays. Source.

What is the cognitive triad?

Finally, let us know what is the well-known cognitive triad, proposed by Beck, which is present in people with depression, and which, as expected, appeared in my case. As I mentioned before, I was an insecure and self-conscious child and adolescent. My self-esteem was not the best and there we already see at the forefront one of the parts of the triad. Also, my view of the world was a bit dark, in the sense that many things were negative for me. If I made a mistake, I would accuse myself mercilessly and I believed that it would always be like that, that I would never learn. Besides, I thought that other people did not appreciate anything good in me. I saw the world as a cruel place, incomprehensible to me. This is another part of the triad, how I see the world around me.

I think that despite all this sum of negative thoughts and considerations, I never thought that the future would be dark or sad. But when I am diagnosed and more and more difficult and deep episodes are added, the other ingredient of this triad starts to appear: I see a bleak future and that is when I start to consider suicide as an option to get out of this pit. That's why I mentioned at the beginning of this post, that these three symptoms are among the most difficult to deal with. A negative view of myself, the world and the future is not the most encouraging thing for anyone. That is the cognitive triad in depression. In them I will give you more details about what my experience with the cognitive triad was and how I overcame it.

We will keep reading.

"Cognitive therapy seeks to relieve psychological tensions by correcting misconceptions and self-signaling. By correcting misbeliefs, we can end overreactions."

Hello @garybilbao
The truth is that mental illnesses are quite difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to treat, at present it is difficult for a person suffering from depression to be treated only with therapy, because it has been shown that there are neuroendocrine disorders that predispose to depression.
But behavioral therapy is a valuable tool in this condition.

Hi
both psychology and psychiatry are important streams to unlock the mysteries of the mind.
Indeed an interesting insight into a complex subject my friend.

I think depression is such a dangerous but yet such a difficult illness to treat. A lot of people do not know how hard these conditions can affect people and it really is necessary to help people out of these situation!

Great summary of this difficult topic :)

Depression is real but not so many people are aware of the deadliness of depression, the earlier we identify the condition, the faster it would be easier to treat. Unfortunately, so many people have died as a result of undiagnosed or untreated depression.
