World Day for Beaches and Coastal Sustainability

On World Beaches Day, which is celebrated on the third Saturday of September every year, it is an excellent opportunity to exercise Environmental Education on the Ecotone called Coasts. Ecotone is the zone of relationship between two environmental entities (between two ecosystems, two biomes, two bioregions, emerged and submerged ecosystems). Littoral is when the Coast is a mountain that emerges or submerges from a body of water. Beaches are coasts with a flat sedimentation system.

Humanity, since its early appearance as a species, has been consistent in the use and occupation of the coastal ecotone. We remember and emphasize that the coasts are the ecotones of the emerged and submerged ecosystems.

Since the Human Environment Summit in Stockholm in June 1972 and its subsequent Summits of Rio 1992, Johannesburg 2002 and Rio 2012, developed the definition of sustainability, as a way to follow the development of humanity with all the respect to the environment and also to itself. World Beaches Day is a special opportunity for the discussion and establishment of recommendations to establish the sustainability of all the coasts of our planet.

In the World Beaches Day, this Environmental Education, this search for Sustainability of the Coasts, through the discussion, the relation of the occupation and use of the ecosystems of the lithosphere (in the emerged lands) and of the bodies of water (wetlands, lakes, seas, oceans) is implicit, because the Coast is a reflection of this relation of the humanity with the planet.

Therein lies the importance of World Beaches Day, because the coasts are the reflection of our action as a species in the biosphere.

We ask everyone to contribute with their diagnoses, their methods of recovery of the affected areas, their projections of a true sustainable relationship of humanity with the coasts and that we undertake, without giving up, Environmental Education on the subject of our sustainable relationship with the coasts.
