Adolescents and Social Media || The Good, the bad, the ugly!
Adolescence is a delicate stage in an individual’s lifetime, it is a period that is filled with doubt, curiosity, pressure, exploration and rebellion. Teenagers are on the brink of independence and finding their place in the world. It is through their curiosity and explorations however that they often fall into situations that are not healthy for them, both mentally and physically. Premarital and recreational sex is one of the temptations that most teenagers succumb to in the modern era we live in.
Adolescence is a transitional period that occurs between the stage of simply being a child and adult life. While teenagers have always been known to experiment, our current lifestyles are making it much easier for them to get up to things that they are likely not mature enough for just yet. These day, parents are busier, so that don’t have much of a hand on things like they used too. To add to this, the introduction of social media has made the whole world available to our naïve youngsters.
Social media is a tool that is used to make people around the world share their knowledge, communicate and often do business. This is all good, however, it seems that our kids are using this technology for all sorts of other intentions. Sex is one of them.
Not only does social media and the internet as a whole open up gateways to pornography and online dating, but it has also introduced cybersex. While some might say that cybersex is safer than the real deal, often the kids do not know who it is they are chatting too, putting them in potential danger is their “partner” has other dangerous intentions.
Parents and teachers have it hard, they’re busy, I know! But it is our responsibility, on top of all other responsibilities, to keep our children safe and to monitor their doings. Allow your children to use technology, technology is good! But make sure they are using it for the right reasons. Set limits on their phones and devices where they cannot access certain sites, or chat to them about the dangers found online. Last but not least, set the example. Use your social media for good purposes only, and limit the use too, there’s so much more to do out there!

Parenting is a lot of job, while we expose our kids to the opportunities available on the internet, we need to be cautious to watching over them as well, ensuring they have no access to things that will ruin their childhood.
