There are so many wonderful things happening in the world despite the coronavirus pandemic that has almost paused the human civilization. And I think this is quite necessary.

Among those things is the Starlink project. If you were not aware, this project is one of the most exciting things that is happening currently. It will build a space-based broadband network that can be accessed from anywhere on the planet.

Basically, it means getting wifi from space (sort of). The Internet has become a necessity today but there are billions of people who still don't have access to it. Just imagine the potential that will be unlocked if these people come online!

That is exactly what the Starlink project will help achieve. Since it is a space-based system, the usual obstacles won't arise. All you would need is a receiving device and you will have access to high-speed internet, no matter where you are.

Online In Just 6 Months?

A few days ago, SpaceX launched another batch of 60 satellites into orbit in an ongoing effort to complete the Starlink network. There are still thousands of satellites to be launched before it will get completed.

On the heels of the launch, Musk tweeted that the network will come online for a public beta test in just 6 months. That is one of the most exciting things I have heard all month.

The test will prove once and for all whether the Starlink constellation will be able to beam internet services from space reliably. 'Reliably' is the main part there. Only then can it become a viable project. There will probably be a lot of load on the network as billions of people start using it simultaneously.

Even more exciting is the fact that private beta begins in only 3 months. That should also provide a lot of answers about the viability. In the coming years, SpaceX will be able to launch the service in more countries as they keep launching thousands of satellites.

When it is all done, the world will finally have unbridled access to high-speed, space-based, broadband internet. In the 21st century, we humans should at least have this!
