There are several places in the Philippines where the sea gets really dry when it's low tide. The good thing about this dried sea, we can find lot of foods to eat. For us Filipinos we always eat rice during meal but with a viand food as a partner to it. I don't know but it's like it's hard to eat rice food if there's no viand food.

Now there is a type of sea urchin that is popular because it's easy to get but it's delicious. What I'm referring is this type of sea urchin named "dapaw-dapaw"(bisayan word.) This kind of sea urchin can be found under the sand, it's like this.

You will know that there will be dapaw-dapaw under the sand when you'll see group of small stones. Also when the sand will be formed like a mountain shape. It's not under of that mountain shape like but it's besdie of it because it will show that the sand gets deeper. The sand that looks deeper even though there's no hole, that's where you can find dapaw-dapaw.

You can use anything as long as it can dig under the sand. It could be your hand because the sand is so soft but let's do safer way. This kind of sea urchin has small and tiny thorns of it. Not that painful anyway but it's disturbing to your finger if it will stuck. IMG_20200221_064725.jpg
The location where dapaw-dapaw can be found is not deep. Maybe it's so clear for you to see how deep that I already got dapaw-dapaw. Actually it's not hard to find this kind of sea urchin but it will be hard if you have no idea how to find it.

We eat dapaw-dapaw as a viand food for out rice. Maybe you'll be interested to eat, so let me teach you how to do it and what to it of it.

First, you need to cut it into a half. The food you can eat in sea urchin is inside of it. Also this type of sea urchin is not hard. You can cut it into hand by your force or the advisable way is to cut it with knife.

What you see above is it's half where the food we want to eat is inside. But you can't eat right away because there are some sand inside like it's their intestine. You need to wash it in romoving the sand. IMG_20200221_074410.jpg

Ad you can see I put it into sea water to clean it. Also just a reminder, don't use fresh water in cleaning because the taste of this won't be delicious. I used the sea water so that it will be tasty.

There you have it, I already cleaned what's inside and ready to it. That small part with color is the one can be eaten. Although this kind of small because there are also season fort them to grow bigger. Now it's ready to eat.. IMG_20200221_074446.jpg
It depends on your taste how is to be done. But most of us here, we put vinegar into it to make it tastier. Not the chemical type of vinegar. What I'm referring is the vinegar that is provided by coconut tree.

I'm not sure if you'll love it but I'm confident to say that you will. Most of this kind of food or sea urchin can only be found in the province part of the Philippines. I hope you'll find it interesting to know or to read.

Well done. I used to dig for clams. They are very popular to eat where I grew up as a boy.

Always appreciate you sharing on the PYPT Show. You always have wonderful posts to share.

Thank you sarge, as always your words are delicious to the heart. You inspired me to keep on writing, thanks again..

Great post @mrnightmare89 It's so important to be close to nature like this and foraging for food is a big part of knowing how to be self sustaining in the natural environment.

I've never tried sea urchin before... not sure if I would be brace enough lol

I saw this post on shoadowpubs radio show. Thanks for sharing on #pypt

I have heard that some people eat sea urchin, but I never had the chance. I like most seafood, though, so maybe some day I can try it! It was interesting to read how you find them and prepare them! Thanks for teaching us about your country on PYPT, as it is always fun to learn about other parts of the world! 🙂
