Ms. Zhu postulates that personal information can be monetized as asset. I see there are at least two practical challenges to such postulate.

(1) Ownership: Unlike physical things, information can be replicated (or copied) unlimited times. In order to claim ownership, music or pictures have to be protected by copy right or content protection. With continuing-changing personal data, there is no clear way to define the ownership of personal data. Once your information is sold, it can be resold without your permission since you already sold your ownership. Your data become worthless after just one sale.

(2) Price: except a few very limited situation (such as vote), your personal data will not exceed your purchasing power. It is like there is no point to send you any ad if you are penniless. Therefore, the price for personal data, even if possible, will track your personal wealth. The data of rich person is reasonably higher than that of a poor person.

From the above analyses, monetizing one’s personal data does not seem to be feasible.

On the other hand, monetizing other personal data has been good businesses. There is why reporters are going after dirt of celebrities.
