Trip to South Angeiras - Lavra | Portugal
The weather is not enjoyable and it threatens to rain at any moment, but that won't stop me from taking this ride.
Today we are going to Lavra's sides, starting on the south side of Angeiras, in this place that fills me with nostalgia, recalling several moments of my childhood spent during some summer holidays.
Before going anywhere, I always do a brief search for interesting places to visit, and in this case I ended up discovering something that until today I didn't know existed in this place and it was from this place that I decided to start today's ride.
Right at the entrance to the walkway that runs along the coast, on the left side we have a preserved example of the characteristic "houses" Casas de Mar de Angeiras, which until the mid-20th century were part of the traditional architecture of the region, in a community dedicated to fishing and agriculture , it was in these small houses that belonged to the large farming houses of the region that the fishermen kept the boats and all the utensils used in the work.
Even today, this exemplar fulfills the same purpose of storing this type of utensils, and even outside it is possible to find fishing utensils scattered around the surrounding space, as is the example of this tangle of ropes and fishing nets that most serve as decorative details, since it will no longer be possible to take out any kind of utility taking into account the material condition.
On the right side of the walkway we can see what I did not know existed in this place, the Roman tanks created there during the time of the Roman occupation and perfectly preserved and used for fish salting.
Angeiras has always been known, in addition to the coast and its beaches, for the quantity and quality of the fish and fresh seafood that exists there and that is sold in the fish market right next door, and these tanks prove that in this place the sea it has always been very important in the sustainability of the different communities and peoples that have passed through the ages.
This rocky coast, with its cliffs rich in mussels, limpets and perch, to which the abundant algae are added, creates a very unique ecosystem.
Following the walkway towards the north side of Angeiras, we left the south beach behind and quickly arrived at the fishermen's beach located in a central position.
Here everything is sea, everything is fishing, everything is work and it is difficult, it is a mixture of colors and wear, of nets and traps, of hopes and obligations, of a heavy heritage that is not bland when it comes to making the day count.
When boats come from the sea, they are pulled by a tractor that goes up the sand and leaves them at the limit that separates the room from the fisherman's workshop, this is their garden, full of texture and disorder.
Although this beach is very popular, when extending the towel to sunbathe and go for a swim, I advise you to choose between the south or north beach of Angeiras, because on the fishermen's beach, as the name indicates and from what you can see in the photos , here work is superimposed on leisure and in this place you will not have much peace with such haste.
This place of departure and arrival is so important for the fishing community that they decided to create a huge wall in order to reduce the sea agitation in this place to facilitate the entry and exit of fishing boats.
I know that time does not help and that the storm will be for minutes and maybe that is why this place seems uninhabited… during this ride I did not see a boat at sea or a fisherman on land, nothing, I walked around there alone wandering and breathing that breeze loaded with saltpeter…
It was when I went to the northern part of Angeiras that I came across some inhabitants and visitors who went there to eat fresh fish, but the route through the north will be for the next post.
That´s all for today :)
See you soon
