Plagiarism can be defined as upholding or claiming someone else's brain child as your own by failing to give proper credit to the original owner. Plagiarism often shows up under different names: misappropriation, faulty citation, copyright infringement, literary theft, imitation, cheating, cribbing, and stealing, to name a few. I should point out, however, that Plagiarism is a theft and is liable to sanction or penalty, therefore proper citation or credit should be given to the original owner in order to avoid sanctions or imprisonment.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

As I’ve said before, Plagiarism is the dishonest act of trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own. In this Achievement 3 I’ll be highlighting different types of plagiarism that we have :

  1. MOSAIC OR PATCHWORK PLAGIARISM
This has to do with paraphrasing someone else's work without proper citation, this type of paraphrasing can be done from one or several sources. which is often difficult to detect.
  2. COMPLETE PLAGIARISM
This involves copying and pasting someone else's original work in its exact words, in order words when someone tries to submit an entire research work as their own without proper attribution, complete plagiarism has occured.
  3. SELF-PLAGIARISM
This is the act of repeating oneself, which is also known as auto-plagiarism. self plagiarism happens when you copy your own writing or work.
  4. ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM
This can be seen as coping another writer's work which is not always on purpose or intentional, without properly citing the source or give credit to the source.
  5. DIRECT PLAGIARISM
This is also known as verbatim, which is also an intentional form of stealing someone else's content.

DISADVANTAGES OF PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism has numerous disadvantages which includes the following;

CYBER-PLAGIARISM:
Access to the Internet and digital technologies has become the primary source of information used in academic papers, and, according to numerous studies, it's therefore accountable for the greatest number of cases of cyber-plagiarism which has lead many Student to err in this regard.

Legal Repercussions: An author has the right to sue a plagiarist for copying his or her person’s material without citation and reference, As a student or professional writer, to plagiarize is a serious ethical and perhaps legal issue.

WAYS TO STOP PLAGIARISM

PLAGIARISM CHECKER: An effective way to detect or stop plagiarism is the use of plagiarism checker. Today, there are many free and paid online plagiarism checkers that can help one to avoid plagiarism for instance plagiarism.org and the likes. Some of the most effective online tools for checking plagiarism currently are; grammarly and copyscape . One can decide to use any of the available tools in order minimize plagiarism.

SUMMARY

In summary, the increasing rate of plagiarism is a social problem that engages institutions and publishers. However, numerous algorithms tried to overcome these problems using structural and semantic detection system. As I outlined in my previous discussions, worthy of note is that plagiarism is tantamount to theft and should be well avoided.
