On my last trip before the lockdown, I was in Valencia for a few hours. So I wanted to review an extraordinary place for me that I had already visited some years before: The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias.
Anyone interested in modern architecture should definitely dedicate a trip to Valencia and visit this extraordinary complex project by the visionary Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. Beginning in 1996, the construction of this innovative complex of buildings has contributed to making Valencia a truly unique destination for lovers of modern architecture.
The use of innovative technologies but with great respect also for traditional techniques give this place an unforgettable charm and, I can assure you that walking among these buildings is almost exciting. Each building that composes it has a very particular form and a specific function and, also for this reason, the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is very popular not only for passing tourists but also for the citizens of Valencia.
Its name evokes its main vocation which with the great theater is a place of art of excellence that communicates with the nearby science museum. If Barcelona owes a great deal, also in terms of tourist flows, to the numerous and extraordinary architectural works designed by Gaudì, the city of Valencia will see its name associated with the extraordinary work designed by the architect Calatrava.
But let's see better the individual buildings that make up this complex.
The Museum of Sciences Prince Felipe a modern, interactive museum dedicated to science and technology. 40,000 square meters of space entirely dedicated to scientific progress. Its shape is reminiscent of an ocean wave.
Inside you will find not only the rooms of the museum, which is located on the upper floor but, on the ground floor you will find a well-stocked book shop where you can buy original objects that have as their main theme the most important discoveries and the protagonists of the history of science and technique.
Very original installations located in the wide spaces of the structure complete and qualify this place.
The Hemisfèric instead houses a 3D digital cinema. Its shape and architectural design resembles a huge human eye. Inside a giant concave screen projects during the day various movies and especially documentaries.
Its position, in the middle of the vast body of water, creates beautiful reflections and forms the backdrop for modern installations of works of art. Its compact and regular shape contrasts with the nearby and imposing silhouette of the theater.
The Oceanogràfic is the largest aquarium in Europe where you can also watch a dolphin show. There are about 40,000 different species found in this aquarium where you can see different habitats.
I was able to see many animals and visiting this space is a celebration for families and children. Take several hours ... it takes all to visit it all in peace.
The building that has perhaps the most unusual shape is the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
It is the building, located at one of the ends of the complex, it is the first one to meet if you arrive from the area where the buses stop. The visual impact is truly remarkable ...!
Its forms are reminiscent of those of a human head wearing a helmet! This unique building hosts cultural events in opera, music, dance and theater of great importance.
When shows are held the building and the whole area is illuminated during the evening hours and in this circumstance the show is double.
The Umbracle is a huge rich in typical Mediterranean vegetation. The garden is enriched with the presence of some contemporary sculptures.
An ideal place to stop and rest in the midst of greenery and the scents of lavender
The Ágora is the newest building of the complex of the *Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias* and, as its name suggests, it is a large space that is home to different kinds of events.
The Bridge
Its shape is impressive which reminds me of the shape of a fish and where the intense blue color of the roof dominates the whole Citè complex and converses wonderfully with the blue Mediterranean sky of the city of Valencia.
The *Bridge Assud D'Or* located between the Museo de las Ciencias and the Ágora through the Turia River which is the City of Valencia. A slingshot launched on the sky ..
The construction technique used is that of the cable-stayed bridge, where iron braces support the bridge deck and give the structure a particular lightness.
The complex of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is naturally well connected to the city center but with few euros you can reach it comfortably by taxi.

So beautiful photos! I hallucinated with the umbracle and the fantastic shapes that are silhouetted against the sky. Do I see lavender in the penultimate photograph? It was surely an unforgettable trip. Thanks for sharing
Yes, just a quick trip. I have been there 2 times but I would also go back a third to visit the structures inside them more calmly. Thanks for stopping by.
