After completing my Achievement 2 task, I have read the article The Complete Steemit Etiquette Guide (Revision 2.0) -Homage

Etiquettes are necessary for every society for preventing chaos and it is equally true for online communities. There are certain rules and codes of conduct which can provide us with an orderly environment that is comfortable and safe for all the people in the community.

We, Steemians, are part of the Steem community and there are certain things that the community has decided that we should follow like respecting fellow members, engaging through curation and commenting, posting within limits, labeling NSFW if there is nudity or graphic content, showing courtesy, not asking for votes and not re-steeming everything we see, etc.

But the most important thing that we should never do in any circumstance is to plagiarize. This is an etiquette that is strongly prohibited by the Steem community and today I am writing my understanding of plagiarizing.

Plagiarism's Definition:

You always call your friend's home a friend's home, not your own.
Similarly, when we borrow the thoughts or content like images or any other creation that is made by others or even our own selves previously, we always have to say from where we borrowed it. If we do not mention the source then that is called plagiarism. To make it more clearer, let’s have a look at a few definitions of plagiarism:

"Plagiarism, the act of taking the writings of another person and passing them off as one’s own. The fraudulence is closely related to forgery and piracy—practices generally in violation of copyright laws."

Encyclopaedia Britannica

Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work or borrowing someone else's original ideas. But terms like "copying" and "borrowing" can disguise the seriousness of the offense:
According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, to "plagiarize" means:
• to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
• to use (another's production) without crediting the source
• to commit literary theft
• to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source
In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else's work and lying about it afterwards.Source

Even students in the universities are instructed to avoid plagiarism. Let’s have a look at Oxford’s instruction:

Plagiarism is presenting work or ideas from another source as your own, with or without consent of the original author, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition, as is the use of material generated wholly or in part through use of artificial intelligence (save when use of Artificial Intelligence - AI for assessment has received prior authorisation e.g. as a reasonable adjustment for a student’s disability). Plagiarism can also include re-using your own work without citation. Under the regulations for examinations, intentional or reckless plagiarism is a disciplinary offence.
Oxford Students

It is easily understandable that plagiarism is a crime And ettiquette-minded people should never do it. At present, it also is necessary that we do not use content generated by AI as our own. Not giving proper credit is like stealing and theft is punishable by law. Steemit is a community that maintains its standard in all possible ways and we must not tarnish the community or our own image through stealing.

However, if we are in a hurry and do not check our content then there could be some elements in our posts that fall under “reckless” plagiarism. That should also not happen and to avoid that we must use the tools available to check thoroughly every time we post something.
I have read various articles on plagiarism to complete this task and found the types of plagiarism from geeksforgeeks

Plagiarism types:

a) Complete Plagiarism: To completely steal someone’s else’s works and passing it as their own.
b) Verbatim or direct plagiarism: We need to use quotation marks for using someone else’s speech or words. When someone does not do it and incorporates other people’s words in their writing without quotation then it is called verbatim or direct plagiarism.

c) Self Plagiarism: Often people can self-plagiarise. Writing or producing the same work again and again is not acceptable. When we are writing too many things or are out of new ideas then such a thing might happen.
d) Source-Based Plagiarism: Sometimes people give wrong references or misquote the source. If proper source is not mentioned then it is called source-based plagiarism.
e) Accidental Plagiarism: This might happen that a person does not understand how to give due credit to the authors or the owner of the idea that S/he is using and this lack of knowledge results in accidental plagiarism.

Causes of plagiarism:

  • lack of knowledge about plagiarism
  • running out of new idea
  • having poor knowledge about the subject
  • lack of confidence
  • unwilling to work to create something new
  • Not investing enough time for a content
  • Being a thief

How to avoid plagiarism?

  • Gaining knowledge about plagiarism
  • Learning how to give proper credit
  • Having proper etiquette and honesty
  • Using various websites to check the write-ups for plagiarism before posting
  • Becoming willing to create original content
  • Having faith in one’s own-self and cultivating integrity.
I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.
