in Newcomers' Community3 years ago
Hello fellow Steemians and welcome to my achivement 3 post titled "Content Etiquette" in this post, I am going to talk about Plagiarism.

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

Plagiarism can be defined as the usage of another person's work or ideas, (this work can either be written or oral) without permission.

In a layman term or in simple English, Plagiarism is the copying and pasting of someone else's work without acknowledging him/her as the author/creator/owner of the work.

Yes it is true that anyone that creates a content will be happy or excited for his/her work to be used but when you use or share it and take credit without acknowledging or paying respect to the author (by naming the author or citing the source of your content) then this is plagiarism and it can also be regarded as theft, piracy, stealing, poaching etc.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

There are very many types of Plagiarism, these include;

  1. Direct Plagiarism: this can be called verbatim plagiarism, in this type of Plagiarism, the author copy's everything from another author, in verbatim (word for word) without even using quotation marks or citing the original author thereby fronting the work as his own.

  2. Self Plagiarism: also known as Auto Plagiarism, this occurs when an author copy his old work and front it as a new one without citing the old work.

  3. Paraphrasing Plagiarism: this is seen as the most common type of Plagiarism because here the author makes use of someone's work making only few changes to make the words different but even if the words are different, the idea of the original author is still there, thereby making it a plagiarized work.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

  1. Citing your Source: when ever an author copy a work be it in word or image, he/she has to cite the source of the work.

  2. Using of Quotation (""): when an author wants to quote verbatim from another person's work, he has to make sure he uses quotation marks.

  3. Making Use of Plagiarism Checker sites: even after making proper citation, using of Quotation marks, an author still has to run his/her work through websites like https://smallseotools.com/plagiarism-checker/ and others that help detect plagiarized work for the author to be sure he has not done Plagiarism even by accident.

In conclusion, plagiarism is a very serious offense here on Steemit and when caught you stand a chance of getting a downvote and your reputation reduced, other than these, your account will be on the watchlist of Steemcurator01 and endplagiarism and your integrity in this steemit world will be tarnished.

So in summary, AVOID PLAGIARISM.
