ACHIEVEMENT 3 BY @obasuyi-stephen. TASK: CONTENT ETIQUETTE
Hello everyone! Once again I must say that the last task on Basic Security was really educating, I learnt a lot on that task, and I hope to apply the knowledge soon.
Today I shall be performing task achievement3 on content etiquette; I will be writing about plagiarism, the types, consequences and how to avoid plagiarism.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, plagiarism is; "The practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own". So, plagiarism is blatant theft of ideas, words, or products of others.source
A lot of ideas and concepts have been either stolen intentionally or accidentally, for this reason,I would define plagiarism as any act that can be characterized as intellectual theft which could be intentional or accidental.
— DIRECT PLAGIARISM: This is the outright copying of somebody else's academic work, word for word without proper citation or using quotation marks. Citation can be done by adding the (>)just before the original piece or by writing the original piece in quotation marks “”.
See the definition of plagiarism above for example on citation.
— PATCH WRITING: This can also be avoided with the use of quotation marks. This occurs when a person copies a phrase from a source, sometimes the person may change synonyms, but this doesn't change anything as long as the style and meaning of the content is the same.
— ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM: This can occur out of mistake or neglect, but plagiarism has no room for this. This occurs when a person fails to cite his/her source or or mistakingly inputs a wrong source. This can be avoided by carefully citing your source, and double checking your source to ensure it is correct, also avoiding unintentional paraphrasing.
—SELF PLAGIARISM: In this situation, the person copies his or her past projects or assignment without citing, the intention in doing this may be to present the work as a new piece, however this can be avoided by citing your work properly.
—The he/she will lose credibility
— The he/she may be ordered to pay a fine as compensation
— He/she will be given low score for the work
—Ensure to cite source properly
—Avoid unnecessary paraphrasing
—Ensure to use the > or quotation mark when citing
—When consulting your old project or assignment, ensure to cite as well
— Download and use a plagiarism detector
Plagiarism is a very dishonest approach, whether done intentionally or accidentally, hence we should endeavor to write carefully and cite properly. Thanks for reading.
