Environmental quality involves maintaining a balance between human activities (which are processes for development) and the healthy condition of the environment. This leads to what is termed sustainable development, hence, the survival of the living organisms (plants and animals) is ensured..
The environment is endowed with natural and material resources which man exploits in order to effect changes and development. However, human activities sometimes make a negative impact on the natural condition of the environment. It is necessary therefore to strike a balance between development and conservation of the environmental quality for sustainable development.
These include:
| Atmosphere | This is made up of the gaseous portion that envelopes the earth. |

| Lithosphere | The solid portion (crust) of the earth. |
| Hydrosphere | Refers to the total amount of water on the earth, in the earth and in the earth's atmosphere. It includes surface water such as water in oceans, lakes and rivers; groundwater and water in the atmosphere such as vapour. |
Recycling
Recycling simply means treating waste materials and substances with the purpose of using them again. Recycling is a very good method of waste management. It is a process of waste to useful products.
Method of Recycling
• Soil: Used soil can be recycled by adding manure or fertilizers to give it nutrients.
• Waste water: Waste water can be reused by treating it. The treated water is suitable for irrigation or washing e.g washing of tools.
• Bottles: We can wash used bottles and use them as containers e.g. to store water inside the refrigerator. Used bottles can also be recycled for reuse. Broken bottles can be used for the production of glass.
