ACHIEVEMENT 3 TASK BY @larissa237: CONTENT ETIQUETTE
Hello steemians.
Here is my presentation on plagiarism.
I guest we've all heard of the word plagiarism and on several occasions too. We even practice it at times without knowing that it is an act of plagiarism. This is known as unintentional plagiarism and is opposed to intentional plagiarism where the act is done willingly.
Plagiarism is common among students and scholars who copy and paste assignments from the internet or books without citing the source and behave as though it was thier idea.
Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work. In educational contexts, there are differing definitions of plagiarism depending on the institution.
source
In other words, plagiarism occurs when you use another person's ideas as if it was yours. It is a fraudulent act because it involves stealing from another person without giving credit to this person. One can avoid plagiarism through citation.
Different types of plagiarism exist, among which we have the following;
Global Plagiarism.
Definition
Also known as copy and paste or cloning. Just like it's name indicate, it means taking someone's words entirely and using it as your own without citing or giving credit to the original source. It is one of the most dangerous forms of plagiarism.
Solution
The only way to avoid global plagiarism is by citing the source and also by giving credit to the original source.
Self Plagiarism
Plagiarism does not just involve copying another persons idea or work.it also has to do with recopying or recycling or reusing your own work or idea which had previously been submitted and approved. It is called self plagiarism because credit had already been accorded to the work or idea thus using it again makes it not to be original again. This form is mostly practiced amount students or scholars when doing thier work.
Solution
Originality: use original idea, ideas that are based on your understanding.
Using quotation.
Mosaic Plagiarism
Mosaic Plagiarism has to do with picking up some phrases and ideas for different other write-ups in order to make up your own idea. Sometimes called “patch writing,” because you pick up from several sources, this kind of paraphrasing, whether intentional or not, is fraudulent and thus punishable. source
Imagine using different pieces of materials to produce your dress just like our cameronian mothers will gather different pieces of material to produce their "kaba" commonly known as "cherche le mot", that's exactly how patchwork plagiarism is. Taking ideas from different sources and putting them together to form an idea.
Solution
As a solution to mosaic plagiarism we have;
-Paraphrasing
-Citing your source which can be done by using the page number, year, authors, book from where the idea comes from.
-We also have quotation.
Accidental Plagiarism
Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person does not know how to when and how to cite or summarize . It also occurs when an author is being cited but without being acknowledged of this work. Lack of intent does not absolve the student of responsibility for plagiarism. Though it is not an intentional situation, it is till considered as a fraudulent act and thus punishable just like other cases of plagiarism.
why we should avoid plagiarism.
plagiarism destroys creativity and originality.
it is highly punishable by law and thus must be avoided.
3)it has some monetary consequences as it leads to low sales given that the same idea is found in several books, videos, images, musics...it also destroys reputation.
The practice of plagiarism is one which should highly be condemned due to the many negative consequences it has such as it kills creativity, distruction of reputation, doesn't encourage innovation and thus should be stopped.
I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.
