what is plagiarism?

-Plagiarism is the act of stealing another person's ideas, words, or work without giving credit. It can be intentional or unintentional.

-If you use someone else's ideas without giving them credit, you have plagiarized.

-If you are not sure whether your work has been plagiarized, ask a professor or fellow student for help. Plagiarism is a serious offense and can result in a loss of points and/or a failing grade. Punishment may also include suspension from school, expulsion from school, and/or a lawsuit.

The best way of avoiding plagiarism is to learn and employ the principles of good academic practice from the beginning of your university career. Avoiding plagiarism is not simply a matter of making sure your references are all correct, or changing enough words so the examiner will not notice your paraphrase; it is about deploying your academic skills to make your work as good as it can be.

It is important to be aware of the different types of plagiarism and to avoid committing any of them. If you are accused of plagiarizing, it is important to speak with an experienced academic advisor who can help you understand your options.
