WHAT IS PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else's work as yours. “In academic writing, plagiarizing involves using words, ideas, or information from a source without including a proper citation”.--- https://www.scribbr.com/category/plagiarism/. Plagiarism can have serious consequences for the plagiarist(the person who plagiarises), which range from nullification of his work, to legal consequences in the form of copyright. To avoid plagiarism, we should always cite the source for all our citations.
TYPES OF PLAGIARISM
There exists many different types of plagiarism, some of which are; Direct Plagiarism, Self plagiarism, Hired and Borrowed plagiarism Accidental plagiarism, etc. We shall discuss 4 main types as follows below.
- Direct Plagiarism.
“Also known as “word-for-word plagiarism” or “clone plagiarism,” direct plagiarism involves copying an entire piece of work by someone else and claiming it is your own original work. This is what many people associate with plagiarism, and it is easy for teachers and professors to detect”--- https://examples.yourdictionary.com/12-different-types-of-plagiarism-to-avoid.html - Mosaic Plagiarism
This involves using different materials, phrases and sentences from different sources to create a patchwork, without making proper reference to the original sources. - Hired Plagiarism
This involves paying someone else to do your writeup for you, or buying someone else's work and submitting it as yours - Self Plagiarism
Self plagiarism refers to plagiarism that is done by reusing your past work as a source, without acknowledging this, or without citation. Even though the source is yours, self plagiarism is bad because your readers and followers expect something new, and original.
In what ever form or type, plagiarism is a form of dishonesty and should be discouraged.
HOW TO CITE YOUR SOURCE
In order to properly do your citation, you need to consistently follow a particular style of citation through out your work. For example putting the citation in quotes, which is immediately followed by your reference(source). Some popular citation styles are MLA(Modern Language Association), APA(American Psychological Association), amongst others.
SHOULD EVERY INFORMATION BE CITED?
“Some information is considered common knowledge, which means it doesn’t need to be cited. Common knowledge is information that is widely known and easily verified”. https://www.scribbr.com/category/plagiarism/. A good example is the fact that Africa is one of the continents in the world. This is common knowledge and there is no need to cite it.
HOW TO DETECT PLAGIARISM
There are a number of ways to detect plagiarism as follows.
- The use of applications. There exists certain applications that can check for plagiarism and are called plagiarism checkers. All you need to do is copy the text in question and paste it in the app, which will run a web search, checking the internet database for the exact words
- Notice for the change of style of text within passages.
- Use Google search. This is done by copying the sentence you are suspecting of been plagiarized, and pasting it on Google search, and search. Google will check for such sentence in the internet's database and you can verify for plagiarism.
- Reading for unnecessary diversion of focus within the passage. For example a post Titled “economic development in Africa” at a particular point starts talking about the sociopolitical nature of Africa countries. This is a possibility that the writer plagiarism from a passage talking about Africa.
To conclude, it is important to use citations where neccessary in order to avoid plagiarism.
Thank you all🤝 for your kind attention.
