According to Standford University, plagiarism is defined as the "use, without giving reasonable and appropriate credit to or acknowledging the author or source of another person's original work, whether such work is made up of codes, formulas, ideas, language, research, strategies, writing or other forms.

From this definition by Standford University, i will say that plagiarism is when a person uses another person's original work, be it codes, formulas, ideas, writing formats and many more without acknowledging the author or source.

Consequencies Of Plagiarism

The penalty or consequence for plagiarism is something that comes in different ways, it can be a professional issue, legal, or personal. In plagiarism there is nothing like excuses of ignorance when been caught. Currently, there are a lot of ways plagiarism is been detected, it can be through software detection which is commonly used. Once plagiarism is detected, the plagiarist is penalised.

The Consequencies of plagiarism are;

• It destroys reputation; the reputation of the plagiarist (student or professional in any field) can be damaged when found guilty.
Plagiarism can destroy a student or professional's reputation in so many ways, although it depends on the persons or school involved. Some students are suspended or expelled when been caught, and this affects their the acedemic record or status. Some Universities, college's and many other educational institutions has put seriousness on plagiarism check. The law enforcement Committee organised by the institutions penalises any one that is found guilty.

How to Avoid Plagiarism

According to Raimo Streefkerk plagiarism can be avoided with the following steps;

Step1: Keep track of your source

While you're doing research and taking notes for your paper, make sure to record the source of each piece of information. One way students commit plagiarism is by simply forgetting where an idea came from and unintentionally presenting it as their own.
You can easily avoid this pitfall by keeping your notes organised and compiling a list of citations as you go. Keep track of every source you consult-that invludes not only books and journals articles, but also things like website, magazine articles and videos.
Then you can easily go back an check where you gound a phrase, fact, or idea that you want to use in your paper

Step2: Quote and Paraphrase

While writing your paper, if you want to share an idea or a piece of information from a source, you must either paraphrase or quote the original text.

Quoting

Quoting means coping a piece of text word-for-word. The copied text must be introduced in your own words, enclosed in quotation marks, and correctly attributed to the original author:

For instance: According to Cronon, the concept of wilderness is a cultural invention: "far from being the one place on earth that stands apart from humanity, it is quite profoundly a human creation-indeed, the creation of very particular human cultures at very particular moments in human history".

Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing means using your own words to explain something from a source. It allows you to give only the most important information from a passage. Yo avoid plagiarism when Paraphrasing, you need to make sure that your text isn't too similar to the original.

Conclusion

Whether students or professionals in any given field of life, it is good for us to avoid plagiarism since it negatively affects our reputation. Let us stand to say No to plagiarism and also encourage the young ones to avoid it as well.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will solely do my best to embrace them.
