In this achievement 3 post, I will be talking about Plagiarism: what is plagiarism? Disadvantages of plagiarism and how to avoid plagiarism.

What is plagiarism?

It is an act of stealing words, initiative or ideas of another person as your own without crediting the person. Any act whereby someone presents the work of another person as a new or original work of their own without crediting the person, is plagiarism. Inorder words, it doesn't just involve stealing another person's work but also lying about it.

Disadvantages of Plagiarism

1. Professional reputation may be destroyed:
   As a professional working in an organization, committing plagiarism may lead to query or sanctions which may distabilize one's reputation in a professional field.
2. Academic reputation may be destroyed:
   A student, lecturer or any other administrator of an academic institution found guilty of plagiarism in an academic work such as seminar, project, article or journal may face academic sanctions.
3. Legal action:
   Committing plagiarism can lead to serious legal action in which the culprit may be sentenced.
4. Monetary repercussions:
   Also, plagiarism can lead to serious monetary repercussions in which the culprit may be ordered to pay huge fine to the owner of the work.

How to avoid plagiarism

1. Avoid rush while doing your work:
   It is always good to avoid rush while doing work so as to avoid mistakenly committing plagiarism.
2. Plagiarism checker:
   If you feel your work may be guilty of plagiarism, there are plagiarism checkers online which you can use to check your work.
3. Using quotation:
   Whenever you are directly quoting someone in your work, ensure to use quotation sign to show that you are directly quoting someone.
4. Proofread:
   When you are through with your work, proof read it to ensure you are not skipping anything.
5. Citation or references:
   Always include the reference to the work you copied from. For an official professional or academic work, you can use citation styles such as APA, MLA or Chicago to properly cite your references, preferably on a separate page.
