Achievement 2 @debbiez Task: Basic Security on Steem

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago

Hello steemians.
This is my understanding of the steem security system, what the different keys are, and how we use them.
When i had just joined steem before even posting my achievement 1, i changed phones. I remember contacting @head1, asking him how i was going to access my account since before loosing my phone i had already retrieved my keys and i thought i had lost the file that contained the keys. He said without the keys, i couldn't access the account, that i needed to create a new one. I was hopeless, but luckily i had backed up my keys and i found them.
So on steem, we have different keys that we use to do different activities like am going to break down. These keys help keep your steem it account secure.

POSTING KEY

This is like the first level key. It is used to do basic day to day activities like logging in to your account, posting, editing, commenting, resteeming, voting and following other users. This is the most used key.

ACTIVE KEY

We use this key for more sensitive tasks on steem for example transferring funds, power ups and power downs, converting steem dollars, updating profile information among others.

MEMO KEY

This key is used to encrypt and decrypt memos when transferring funds.

OWNER KEY

This key is the most powerful key and it can be used to change any other key. It us only meant for use whdn necessary.

MASTER PASSWORD

This is not called a key, rather password. This is what can be used to derive all keys for an account, including the owner key. This master password should only be used when one is doing an account recovery.

All these keys are important and should be kept safe, especially the master password. If anyone accesses your master password, they can steal your account. It is recommended that you keep an offline copy of your master password, either on an external disk or hard drive, or a hard copy stored very well. This is what i have also done.

Now let's go through how you can power up your steem.
First, you log in and go to your wallet.

After that you look at steem and click on the drop down menu, and select power up.

The next screen will ask you the amount you want to power up. Below, it shows your balance so you can choose either to power up all your balance or a portion of it. In my picture, my balance is zero because i just powered up recently.

After that you will see that your steem power has increased.
Having more steem power allows you to curate post and also increases your overall stake.
You can also transfer your steem token to another steem user, under your wallet. These transactions require that you use your active key.

Let's keep our accounts safe, keep steeming and keep growing!
