So what's plagiarism?

Plagiarism can be said to be the act of presenting someone else's ideas, thoughts, expressions or work as one's original work either with or without their permission but failing to give them full acknowledgement. Full acknowledgement here simply means giving proper citation to the referenced source.
Plagiarism doesn't apply to just texts which are either published or unpublished but it also extends to cover illustrations, graphs and all forms of media.

Types of plagiarism

There are various types of plagiarism but I'll be talking about a few;

  • Patchwork plagiarism: in this type of plagiarism, the ideas of many authors are interwoven which may include the writer's own thoughts and then published.
    It is hard to detect because the writer tends to switch sentence structures and also use synonyms in order to make it look original
  • Complete plagiarism: this can be said to be a situation whereby an author or writer tends to submit an entire research work done by someone else without proper acknowledgement.
  • Source based plagiarism: this occurs when a writer has two or more sources of information but only cites one when publishing the work
    It can also occur in the form of citation of an incorrect or nonexistent source of reference.
  • Auto plagiarism: this is also referred to as self plagiarism. This occurs when a writer copies or submits part of a previous work or summarizing a previous work and submitting as a whole new project.
    Self plagiarism isn't harmless and is punishable even if you feel the work you copied belongs to you.

How to avoid plagiarism:

  • By proper citation: this means giving proper citation or acknowledgement to the sources referenced
  • Use of quotation marks: the use of quotation marks around texts signify that the texts enclosed by the quotation marks doesn't belong to the writer and are cited from somewhere else
  • Use of plagiarism checker before submission of works .

Conclusion;

Plagiarism should be greatly avoided as it tends to prevent us from harnessing our true talents
Let's be creative guys and kick against plagiarism.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them
