We have such a strong bond with music because it is 'hardwired' into our brains and bodies. I believe almost everyone has listened to music at some point in their lives. As a result, it is assumed that the majority of people understand what music is. Different music genres appeal to different people.

Music impacts individuals a lot in so many ways. Some include :

  • Reduce pain and anxiety

“One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain.” (Bob Marley)source

Music lyrics and soothing beat tends to make one forget their worries and hence reduces pain and anxiety.

While the exact mechanisms are unknown, many researchers believe that listening to music causes the release of opioids in the brain, which are the body's natural pain relievers.

Researchers discovered that those who listened to music after their surgery reported less pain and anxiety than those who did not, and they were also less likely to require pain medication, after analyzing 72 randomized controlled trials involving over 7,000 patients who had surgery.source


  • An Effective Stress Reliever
    When you're stressed, you might find that listening to your favorite music makes you feel better – and there are numerous studies to back this up. Some researchers believe that music can help relieve stress by lowering cortisol levels in the body, which is the hormone released in response to stress.source

“Stimulating music produces increases in cardiovascular measures, whereas relaxing music produces decreases,” they explain. “[…] These effects are largely mediated by tempo: slow music and musical pauses are associated with a decrease in heart rate, respiration and blood pressure, and faster music with increases in these parameters.”


  • Music aids in memory recovery
    Certain songs have the power to remind us of specific times or events in our lives – some that make us smile, and some that we would rather forget.
    With this in mind, we can say music is a very effective mechanism for people to recall certain moments in their lives.
