What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of claiming or presenting someone else's work or ideas as ones own with or without their consent and lack of acknowledgement. In a more practical way, plagiarism can be copying a text or information and using without citing it's source, as well as compiling pieces of information from different sources and using as your's.

Why is plagiarism illegal?

"Plagiarism is essentially theft and fraud committed simultaneously. It is considered theft because the writer takes ideas from a source without giving proper credit to the author. It is considered fraud because the writer represents the ideas as hes or her own."
source

It is equally considered illegal since it violates copyright laws of a country. Plagiarism can be done in a variety of ways and hence has different types.

Direct plagiarism
Direct plagiarism is the word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else’s work, without giving credit and without quotation marks.
Source

Self plagiarism
Self-plagiarism occurs when someone submits his or her own previous work, or mixes parts of previous works, without permission from authorities involved. For example, using the same material from your degree research program for your masters thesis.
Source

Mosaic plagiarism
Mosaic Plagiarism occurs when a person borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds synonyms for the author’s language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original. Sometimes called “patch writing."
Source

Accidental plagiarism
Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or accidentally paraphrases a source by using similar words or groups of words, and/or sentence structure without giving credit.
Source

Plagiarism however can be avoided when you cite your sources, paraphrase rather than copying and pasting, usage of plagiarism checkers, and also the use of quotes. Creativity is however the best option to avoid plagiarism.
Plagiarism encourages laziness, dishonesty, and can lead to serious consequences considering it being illegal.

Citation is an act of giving credit to what ever source you may have gotten information from to add to your material. As earlier mentioned it is one of the ways through which you can avoid plagiarism. It is done withe the use of paranthensis (), [].

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.
