Achievement 3 by @bsaad Task : Content Etiquette

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

“Hello Steemians” would be the normal introduction to any normal post. This issue is one so serious that it would seem like a “not-so-serious” topic if started that way. It is so severe it is considered a crime if violated in any way. Its delicate nature requires that every rule and guideline be followed to the letter without any compromise.

This content highlights the issue of content etiquette, more specifically, PLAGIARISM.

"Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work or borrowing someone else's original ideas. But terms like "copying" and "borrowing" can disguise the seriousness of the offense." source

A proper way to rephrase the definition above to send across the seriousness of plagiarism would be to replace the crossed out words with the boldened ones as seen below.

Plagiarism is copying(stealing) another's work or borrowing(pass off) some else's idea as your own.

The definition above sends across just the right amount of terror associated with plagiarism.

Writing just like any art requires adept thought and brain wracking reflections. Just as a painter has to blend colors perfectly together to produce an unmatched painting, so is a writer required to produce write-ups which portrays originality.

Perfect write-ups give incites to the inspirational bit and the factual bit of writing. source

You just need to think!

Plagiarism does not refer only stealing text, phrases or paragraphs but include include images, videos, GIF's and any original works of others.

Plagiarism comes in different forms. Some types are purely intentional and are considered grave while others are portrayed as mistakes and taken lightly. Irrespective of the type committed, the consequence remains same. The various types of plagiarism are explained into detail by below.

  • Direct Plagiarism

Direct plagiarism is copying exactly all or part of an authors work without giving credit to the author or reference to the source. This is considered as deliberate and intentional and highly abhorred in the writing space.

  • Self Plagiarism

Self plagiarism is when people pass off their write ups made in the past to serve a particular purpose as write ups to address present situations. A classical example will be using the same introductory post presented in the Newcomers' Community as the introductory post in other communities.

  • Mosaic Plagiarism

Mosaic plagiarism is defined as copying phrases and paragraphs without the use of quotation marks which is indicative of borrowing. Rephrasing sentences and the use of synonyms without change in the structure of the write is also classified as mosaic plagiarism.

  • Accidental Plagiarism

This when an writer fails to cite the source of the content he puts in his work or unknowingly construct sentences similar to an original write up without giving proper reverence to its author.

Though it is a crime to pass someone else's contents as yours, it does not mean it is impossible to use the works of others. Using it the right way and giving credit to its original author is key.

Citation is key in various writing disciplines as it gives due credit to the author and also helps writers evade legal consequences. There are various ways to cite borrowed content.
One way would be to mention the name of the author and the date of publication. Another would be to put the borrowed content in quotation.

However, the afore mentioned though great, only does part of the job. The citation is even more complete when a link to the source is attached for reference and further enquiries.
