Task for Achievement 3: Content Etiquette by @amadems

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Wonderful Steemian, it is with pleasure I present to you my achievement 3 task on content etiquette.

Plagiarism is the act of using another person’s work without properly referencing and acknowledging the original source.
Plagiarism is on the increase in recent times due to the availability of information and materials on various topics and subjects on the internet and this offenders do not recognize the fact that these piece of information needed to be harnessed appropriately and in a manner that it stands in line with the approved content etiquette.

“plagiarism violates the rules of academic ethics and constitutes a misrepresentation in the work being graded or delivered." Source

“plagiarism constitutes an infringement of copyright and intellectual property, which could be equated with a crime of infrigenment." Source

There are many types of plagiarism some of which include:

Deliberate plagiarism:

Which involves presenting another person’s work as your own. It also be in the form of using a work or an answer done by a friend or any other person on same subject and not referencing it.

Inadequate Paraphrasing:

This is changing a few words while still retaining same sentence structure as the original.

Self-plagiarism:

This where someone use their previous work in the present. For instance someone lifting an answer or content of their work done in a previous class or institution to same subject in another school and not referencing it.

Inaccurate Authorship:

This entails citing authors wrongly in a work. Here the plagiarist may decide to pick an author of the material used and leave the rest instead of picking all the authors associated with the source used just to divert attention or confuse the reader.

Buying assignment solved by someone else to submit as one’s work and many others. This is now more common amongst students in higher institutions." Source

Plagiarism comes with a lot of consequences such as;

  • Non-approval or revocation of entire work (thesis, journal etc.) associated with plagiarism.
  • It may lead to imprisonment (years varies depending on existing laws).
  • Academically, it may lead to partial or complete expulsion of student found culpable of plagiarism offense.
  • It leads to banning or blocking of the plagiarist online publication accounts.

It has been observed that cases of plagiarism is because one has not read widely to understand the subject matter in question. It therefore means that one of the ways of avoiding plagiarism is for one to read and comprehend a subject matter before writing. Also proper and accurate referencing of original sources used is very important.

Conclusion
In all, one has to be careful while lifting contents from the public domain as there are applied measures given to this effect. We have to learn how to read and understand contents before lifting them so as to make good representation of what we put up as content in the public space.

We have to apply the act of summarizing an article before lifting them also, we can as well use the plagiarism tool checker to fine-tune our article to get ride of plagiarized contents before dropping them in the public domain.

Special thanks to all that put up this achievement task especially to @cryptokannon and the guide received so far from @xkool24.
