Inauguration of Central Shaheed Minar in Jhenaidah :
The newly constructed Central Shaheed Minar was inaugurated at Jhenaidah. The country's second largest Shaheed Minar was inaugurated on Saturday next to the Prerna-71 square of Chuadanga bus stand in the city.

Shaheed Minar will be inaugurated by Shaheon Mahmud, daughter of Shaheed Altaf Mahmud, composer of great Ekush songs. Abdul Hai, Member of Parliament of Jhenaidah-1 Constituency and District Awami League President, was present as the chief guest in the inauguration ceremony under the chairmanship of Jhenaidah Municipality Mayor Saidul Karim Mintu.
Zilla Parishad Administrator Abdul Waheed Zoardar, former Member of Parliament Noorjahan Begum and others were present as special guests.

It should be noted that the Shaheed Minar was built with the financing of Jhenaidah Municipality at a cost of Tk 1 crore 20 lakh. The height of the Shaheed Minar is 32 feet, its radius is East-West-47 and North-South-58 feet 2 inches. It is built entirely of stone and surrounded by steel fencing for safety. Three gates have been kept for public access.
At the beginning of the program, he performed music in tribute to the martyrs. The arena of Shaheed Minar was shaken by the footsteps of thousands of people. Shawon Mahmud planted a Bakul tree in the Shaheed Minar square to honor the memory of language martyrs.

    Brief history of Shaheed Minar

People build monuments to commemorate any historical event. This makes it easier to take the history to heart, the difficult task of paying homage to the immortals becomes simple.

That is why the Central Shaheed Minar was built in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the Bengali language in the language movement of 1952. Our central Shaheed Minar is situated in the premises of Dhaka Medical College.

On February 21, 1952, many were martyred in the indiscriminate firing of the students by the police. In their memory, the students of Dhaka Medical College built a monument very quickly on the afternoon of February 23, which was our first Shaheed Minar. That Shaheed Minar was 10 feet high and 6 feet wide. Designed by Badrul Alam, accompanied by Syed Haider.

GS Sharfuddin supervised the construction of Shaheed Minar. They built the minaret with the help of two masons. On the morning of February 24, Shaheed Minar was inaugurated informally by the father of language martyr Shafiur. Later on February 26, Shaheed Minar was officially inaugurated by Abul Kalam Shamsuddin. But that day the police demolished the Shaheed Minar. Later another Shaheed Minar was built in front of Dhaka College, but it was also demolished.
The foundation stone of the Shaheed Minar that we see today was laid on 21 February 1956. The architect of this Shaheed Minar is Hamidur Rahman. In 1957, under the supervision of Novera Ahmed and Hamidur Rahman, the construction work of Shaheed Minar was started after making the final design. Then on February 21, 1963 Hasina Begum, the mother of language martyr Abul Barkat, inaugurated the Shaheed Minar.
Since then, the Central Shaheed Minar stands proudly in the premises of Dhaka Medical College, highlighting the glorious history of the language movement to the Bengali nation. Every year on February 21, many people show respect and love to the language martyrs by putting flowers at Shaheed Minar.
