Great Victory Day of Bangladesh: 16th December
Today, 16th December, is a glorious and glorious day in the history of Bangladesh. On this day in 1971, Bangladesh emerged as a new independent state in the world. After nine long bloody months of liberation war the Pakistani occupation forces were forced to surrender, adding a glorious chapter to our crown of victory. This day is not just a date; It symbolizes Bengali sacrifice, struggle and courage.
After the partition of India in 1947, East Bengal (now Bangladesh) became part of Pakistan. But from the beginning the people of East Bengal were subjected to exploitation and deprivation by the ruling class of West Pakistan. Bengali's demand for its own distinct nationhood was strongly asserted through the language movement. In the general election of 1970, Awami League led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman won an absolute victory, but the military and political leadership of West Pakistan refused to hand over power to the Bengalis.
On the night of March 25, 1971, the Pakistani military launched a brutal attack on Dhaka called "Operation Searchlight". Thousands of innocent Bengalis were killed. After that, the bloody independence war of Bangladesh began.
People from all walks of life including farmers, workers, students, teachers, women and men of Bangladesh participated in the liberation war. The Indian government then provided training and support to the freedom fighters. The freedom fighters continued to fight against the occupying forces using guerilla warfare tactics. When the India-Pakistan war broke out on December 3, the international situation quickly turned in favor of Bangladesh.
On 16 December 1971, 93,000 members of the Pakistani Army surrendered to the Allied forces at Dhaka's Race Course Maidan (present-day Suhrawardy Udyan). Through this, independent Bangladesh appeared on the world map.
