Season of My Country

A season is a periods of the year that comes in cycles, characterized by noticable change in weather patterns that lasts for a period of time and can be predicted, with such changes affecting the behavior, culture and practices of the people.

How many seasons in your country? Which one is your favorite and why?

In Nigeria, we have a total of two and a half seasons. The dry season, the harmattan transition and the wet season.
The Dry Season
This is a season that stretches from the months of November down to March, it is characterized by very little or no rain fall at all for the whole duration, sunny days with very little cloud cover. This results in the environment becoming very dusty all the way and the sun creating high temperature.

The Harmattan
The harmattan is a transition period between the sessions. it comes as a result of winds blowing from the Sahara across Nigeria, characterized by foggy mornings, with cold dry winds blowing into the hot afternoon sun.
It introduces the cold associated with the next season while the place still remains dry.

The Wet Season
From April to October, we are in the wet season characterized by plenty of torrential rain that keeps the environment wet or flooded. The flood water results in rivers flooding their banks and making many homeless people

If there was one season you wanted to skip forever, which one would it be? Explain the reason.

We have real problems with our dry season because they are too dry and most crops can't grow during the dry seasons in Nigeria. The ground is dry and baked hard by the sun. This will make you think that I will prefer the wet season but that is not the case.
The transition into the wet season allows for planting but once the rain comes, it rains all the time and floods a lot of places. You can't farm at this time either and only already planted crops will survive. So we need the two seasons alternating as it is.

Describe a traditional or special activity that people in your country do during a particular season.

During the end of the harmattan transition period, we have the first rains that soften the ground to allow us harvest our crops, this is also time to prepare the land for the next farming season. So we plant new crops at this time.
The crops will grow through the wet season and will be harvested at the transition period after the dry season.

Are there any special foods or drinks that people in your country enjoy most during certain seasons? If so, what is it and why?

Yes the dry, harmattan and wet seasons all have their seasonal fruits and foods.
The fishing communities provides more fresh fish in the rain season, with other sea foods. At the end of the wet season we harvest new yam and in the dry season we process palm tree to get palm oil

Conclusion

In Nigeria we have two main seasons and a transition season between them. We only have two real seasons and we don't have the luxury of picking one over the other as we depend on both of them. Each season has its advantage though it's the extreme opposite of the other.
It's what I have come to see and it's what I have grown to appreciate as the seasons of my country.
