Her condition is a very rare disease of which only two cases are known, including hers. One of the consequences of the syndrome is that her body fat level is 0%, and she weighs only 29kg (64 pounds); she is not anorexic but cannot gain weight and needs to feed herself in small amounts several times a day. She is blind in her right eye and has limited vision in the other eye.

Lizzie Velasquez has been the target of bullying and cyberbullying, but instead of feeling fear that has strengthened and motivated her to show the world her story, she says that it has not been easy to deal with discrimination, threats, but she wants people to be inspired by her and accept themselves as they are.

She says that when she was little her parents insisted that she should go to school with her head held high, smiling, and always be kind to everyone, that message stuck with her. One of her most difficult days was when surfing the internet she found a youtube video entitled the ugliest woman in the world and she was the protagonist, this video already had millions of views but the most shocking were the comments of the people who had seen it, comments full of hate and discrimination, for example, some said: "Why would her parents have her", "Let them burn her", suggested she should commit suicide, there were even those who said they would go blind if they saw her on the street.

Her life is an example of how cruel human beings can be, we are in a fantasy world where physical beauty is more valued than inner beauty, we must learn to appreciate the qualities of people and to cultivate adequate self-esteem so that we are not affected by what others think, say or think.

Una de las consecuencias del síndrome es que su nivel de grasa corporal es 0%, y pesa sólo 29kg (64 libras); no es anoréxica pero no puede ganar peso y necesita alimentarse en pequeñas cantidades varias veces al día. Es ciega del ojo derecho y tiene visión limitada en el otro.

Lizzie Velásquez ha sido objeto de intimidación y de acoso cibernético, pero en vez de sentir miedo eso la ha fortalecido y motivado a mostrar al mundo su historia cuenta que no ha sido fácil lidiar con discriminación, amenazas, pero quiere que la gente se inspire en ella y se acepten como son.

Cuenta que de pequeña sus padres le insistían que debía ir al colegio con la cabeza en alto, sonriente y siempre ser amable con todo el mundo, ese mensaje se le quedo grabado. Uno de sus días más difíciles fue cuando navegando por internet se encontró un video de youtube titulado la mujer más fea del mundo y ella era la protagonista, este video ya tenía millones de reproducciones pero lo mas impactante eran los comentarios de las personas que lo habían visto, comentarios llenos de odio y discriminación, por ejemplo algunos decían: ¿Por qué la tendrían sus padres?", "Que la quemen", sugerían que debería suicidarse, incluso había quien aseguraba que se quedaría ciego si la viera por la calle.

La vida de ella es un ejemplo de lo crueles que pueden ser los seres humanos, estamos en un mundo de fantasía donde la belleza física es mas valorada que la interna, debemos aprender apreciar las cualidades de la gente y a cultivar una adecuada autoestima para que no nos afecten lo que piensen, digan u opinen los demás.
