A few months ago, our daughter became obsessed with buckles. No matter where she was, if she saw a clip, she had to unclip it. She even carried around an adorable little backpack so that she could work on the buckle. At just a year-and-a-half, Katie was learning hand-eye coordination. She struggled with turning the ends so that they lined up and would sometimes cry out in frustration when they wouldn’t fit together. If she got too frustrated, we offered help, but mostly we just offered encouragement. We would tell her she would get it. We encouraged her that she was almost there, and when that satisfying click was heard, we cheered. After a couple of weeks, she became an expert at clicking and unclicking her buckles. Her blue eyes shimmered with pride from under her mess of tight, red, ringlets. She hadn’t given up, and that click was her reward.

Someone once said, “Failure in people is caused more by lack of determination than lack in talent.” There are many talented people with nothing to show for their gifts simply because they never attempted to use them. When things get difficult, it can be tempting to believe that God is closing the door. What if He isn’t? What if the door sticks because the struggle builds character? As our daughter struggled with the two ends of the buckle, she wasn’t just learning how to click it. She was learning how to twist her hands. She was learning how shapes line up. She was learning diligence in the face of frustration. It is easy to think that when times get difficult it is God telling us we are going in the wrong direction. And truly, if God shuts a door, we need not waste our time trying to pry it open. However, not all doors are locked. Not all doors that are intended for us are easy to open. When our path gets difficult, often the only way out is to remain diligent in going forward.

Galatians 6:9 tells us, “Let us not become weary of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Only God knows what the ‘proper time’ is. We need to trust Him. We need to have faith that God’s plans always succeed. Don’t give up. You’ll get it. You’re almost there. One day, you will look back and see the obstacle course of your life had a purpose. On that day, you will rejoice that you didn’t give up. Hold on. Press forward. Believe.

Shalom!
