Hello, my dear friends, @dove11 has challenged me to participate in a competition which is organized by the India Speakers Community. Yes, Dove, I'm ready for the task of coming up with a fictional story of ‘Who was in the backyard?’. Although I am not a good writer, I will do my best to complete this. I'm going to share a story with you that happened five years ago when I was 12 years old. Now let us move to the story.

My father's family had only two male children. My uncle, the younger brother, stayed in the previous house with their parents, my grandfather and grandmother. While my father, the family's oldest member, had moved to a new home after getting married.

My grandfather never existed in my mind because he passed away when I was a baby. However, I have incredibly fond recollections of my grandma because she lived with us nearly seven years. Anyway, my unmarried uncle continued to live alone after my grandma passed away. My mother provided him with all of his food after grandmas dismiss. Since he works during the weekdays, he usually gets his breakfast and lunch at the workplace canteen. Dinner was supplied by my mother. On holidays, he stays with us and joins us for meals at our home. On weekdays, my younger brother and I had to deliver my uncle's dinner plate to his home.

If we use the main road, it would take us around 800 meters to get from my house to my uncle's house, but there was a shortcut that goes from our backyard to his backyard. We took that route most of the time because it was the quickest way to go to his residence. So, every night I and my younger brother use that path to deliver his dinner plate. At around 6:30 p.m., my mother handed us his dinner plate, and we spent the next two hours playing and talking with him before heading back to our house at around 8:30 p.m.

One full moon Poyaday, both of us went there with his dinner plate. The moon was beautifully lit up. Since this route is quite familiar to us, we have no fear whatsoever when taking it. That day, after spending around two hours there with uncle, we both took the same way back to our house. Now we were very closer to his boundary wall. I detected a strange rustling voice a short distance away. I had never heard this kind of voice before. I was a little bit afraid. I held my younger brother's hand firmly. And I signed him be silent, keeping my finger across my lips. I listened to that sound carefully before turning to put my attention in that direction. I observed someone moving there with the moonlight. My heart started to beat. My mother and father immediately came to mind. My brother was also scared. I was unable to move a foot any further at that point. I was terrified. I looked back and could see my uncle's house. I ran back to my uncle's house while holding my brother's hand and shouted. I had sweat all over my body. We were there even though I lacked the strength to get to his residence side.

After hearing our noises, my uncle ran out of his house and inquired as to why, why? What makes you shout? When he saw how terrified we were, he offered us a glass of water and inquired as to why. Then we both told him about what had happened. After hearing all that story, he came with us to inquire about that. We were no longer terrified because our hero was standing close by. We went behind him pointing out the way we heard the noise. Hearing that voice, Uncle walked there slowly. Once more I saw someone moving near the banana bush. I yelled, "There there, uncle, someone is moving". Uncle also noticed that moving far away. He slowly made his way over there holding a torch in his hand. We also followed him with fear. The banana bush was now very close to us and that sound was coming from that side. My uncle held the torch in that position and then turned to investigate the noise. We noticed that something a white lump had fallen on the ground. Uncle undergoes a close investigation.

Later, Uncle took a closer look to see what was going on with the cat. Then he told us “Don’t worry, it was a cat suffering from labor pains, let’s keep it there and will see tomorrow morning. Then we can find the lovely kittens”. When we heard that voice, we were overjoyed. What a shame moment, we were scared. Then we returned to our home with the anticipation of finding a cute kitten on the following morning.

That is my story, dear friends. I'm confident that everyone knew who was in the backyard. Please leave a remark if my story piques your curiosity. I'd like to give the authoring of this fictional story to @patjewell, @sualeha, @sofian88, @f2i5, and @nadeesew.

A lovely story 👍That's a common fear, especially if you have something in your subconscious that scares you. Nice one.

Thanks for accepting my invitation. I know it's hard to keep a story within 500 words but it's okay. You have a nice imagination for fictional work and that was the reason I tagged you 🎉 Remove/replace shuterstock image as it's not copyright free please.

@senehasa I Loved the story, the fear of the children due to the hoarse voice of the cat giving birth scares my mind too. But all is well in the end. The kids must have found a toy in the form of a kitten in the morning.
